Computer Help

There has to be someone out there with an HP. A friend just dropped off his computer because it will not start up. I notice that there is a Green LED on the power supply in the back of it. The LED only comes on momentarily when you plug the computer in, then goes right back out.

I am guessing (since none of my computer's power supplies have this) that the LED indicates that there is power going to the Power supply. My guess is that the power supply is dead. Anyone else have any ideas? Any help would be great. I just don't want to go out and buy a new PS and find out that I wasted my time.

Thanks

Does the p/s have a fan? Is it running? If it is, unplug the header plugs from the motherboard and check for voltage output with a volt-meter. the plugs should have a 12v and 5v voltage out. No voltage replace the p/s. If thats OK, then find the CMOS battery (looks like a watch battery) change it out. Look for the CMOS jumper 3 pin riser. It should have a jumper across 2 of the pins. Move the jumper over to the right 2 pins count to 10 then move it back to the original position. This will clear the CMOS and would allow the computer to boot.

Pretty sure it's the powersupply. If it was the Laptop, the green light would still be on but the laptop would not boot. Look on EBay for the best price on a replacement.

I snagged a direct replacement PSU for my brothers HP off eBay for under 20 bucks. Get the manuf. and model number off the power supply and search on eBay. It should return a few results for ya.
