I need some help B-A-D Wife is PO'd!

Here's a little background on the house.

 

Built in 1957. Block home, the block is filled with cement & rebar..It's extremely strong. Inside has plaster walls, with double wood floors. Roof is 1.5" thick pine with 2" thick truss', and the house sits off the ground. Why It's built so strong beats me, but it's been through hurricanes since 57' and It survived 3 in less than 2 months with direct hits...

 

SO I have had this wild hair to get new doors inside the house. I am about done with the bathroom gut/remodel, and want to update further inside the house.

 

I measure the doors and truck on down to Lowes to special order two and pickup the rest. I successfully get the doors, and head back to the hacienda.

 

I tear out the old door frame, it's THICK pine it took me forever to get it out, and had to break out the air hammer. The nails holding it to the Iron-like studs must have been 6" long at least. I finally get it out to realize I have made a drastic mistake.

 

The standard door jambs on a pre-hung door are 4 1/4"? deep. Mine are 5 1/4" WTF? SO now I have to find a door and jamb that wil fit my 5 1/4" deep jamb.

 

Any suggestions! Wife is pissed off big time, gotta get this thing eased back in. No door on the bedroom looks like white trash here..lol

Tell her that your aren't "white trash" until there is no front door on the house.

 

 

 

Seriously though, if Lowes/Home Depot/Menards/Whatever dont have them pre-made, just make your own.

 

If you can't do that, I know that at most of the places around here you can take the old one in, and they will measure it and manufacture you a pre-hung unit to the same specs as the old door (I've done this a couple of times). Problem there usually lies in getting the old one off there in as few pieces as possible.

5 1/4" is a common jamb size especially on older homes. Lowes/home depot/menards can special order doors with different jamb sizes. I should know I worked in the mill work dept for menards for a yr and a half. THe option wasnt to expensive maybe $20 more a door. You may also want to call and ask if they sell a jamb extension kit. We had them for exterior doors and it would mount onto the door jamb and give you what you needed (we had 5 1/4" and 6 9/16").

My first suggestion would be to hire a professional .But the extension jamb would be the best bet without waiting for special order doors. Just make sure to put the extension on the jamb away from the hinge. If you put it on the hinge side the door won't open all the way, if that's a problem. Wont be if the door opens onto a wall. Not a big deal. Maybe you could just case the openings and forget the doors all together, cept maybe the bathroom. Good luck.

Measure twice......go to Lowe's once.

 

I agree with Worktruck, just make (or buy) jamb extenders for the doors and move on. Of course, you are going to have a tough time finding 1" stock at Lowe's or Home Depot without paying a mint for it........I guess you should definitely make them yourself.

Well I went to lowes and the final price for the 5 1/4" door jamb was $200 + some other stupid charge. I usually stand behind lowes and buy most everything there. I've had BAD luck with doors from these people.

 

 

I go to Home Depot, get the same door, but better quality jamb with thicker wood , for $106.00 out the door. I bought all the other doors from them, so I should have known.

 

I ordered just one (the one I destroyed) to see how it fits, if it fits correctly, I'll order the rest.

Lowes seems overpriced. I know when I was working at menards they opened a lowes down the street and people were always complaining how much more expensive they were. Some things were $50+ more.

Just something I heard from a bitter old man the other day....But...Doesn't WalMart own Lowes?

 

I wouldn't think that they did, as they are more expensive than Home Depot here as well, and that's not WalMarts MO.

I thought the same thing about Wallyworld and lowes. but they are not owned by the same . They do share Marketing and site evaluation. Thats why where there is a wallyworld a lot of times you see a Lowes.
