a while back I asked if when ordering my 2005 2500HD w/ duramax/allison, If I should woory about the gears when putting 35's on. Someone said the deisel would have no problem. Now ordering it I find that it has a 373 or something like that. Doing alot of readin and alot of you have told others to get a 410 minimum or better a 456. So with that I try to change the rear end when ordering and it says I can't with the 8' bed style. what is that ? Shoulden't I be able to order it with the rearend I want? sorry but this is my first time ordering a truck and want to get it right, the salesmen just keep screwin me around so I'm tryin to do this myself, with your help of course

your opinions are appreciated.............chaz

Well,

First off, whomever mentioned the Durmax had enough to turn 35's doesn't really understand why you need lower gears. You need the lower gear ratio so the larger tire size doesn't strain the transmission. You also need the lower gear ratio to maintain your towing capacity. Stock ratio and larger tires can/may reduce your overall towing capacity by several thousand pounds.

Next, when you asked for the Duramax Option you are upgraded to an Extreme Duty 14-bolt axle with an 11.50" Ring Gear Size without C-Clips. Trucks with the 6.0 V-8 only get the Heavy Duty 14-Bolt axle with a 10.50" ring gear and C-Clips to hold the axle shafts on.

Finally, when going to a lower ratio (ie 4.10 or 4.56) the Pinion is reduced in size which reduces strength. As of right now GM does not feel the Extreme Duty Axle included with the Duramax is strong enough to support the weight of the truck, a 16,000 pound trailer and 605 lbft of Diesel Torque. So they limited the axle to 3.73 ONLY. GM feels in order to pull heavier loads a 4.10 or 4.56 option is better suited, but the reduced pinion size weakens it, so there is no benefit with the lower 4.10/4.56 ratio. Ford does not agree and as of 2005 allows for lower ratios to be purchased for increased towing capacity. I agree with Ford. GM should get on the bandwagon soon because I feel many Duramax's would be sold with 4.10's.

So, if you want the Duramax you have no choice but to purchase the truck with 3.73's. Sure the Diesel has MORE than enough power to turn 35" tires, but the transmission will bear the load by heating up and....well....you know...

do ya think I can have the gears changed after I buy the truck without a warranty issue. Or should I just live with the 373 gears. What would you guys do?

Many people roll 35's with 3.73's. Just remember, if yo do you no longer have the strength and towing capacity of 2500/3500 truck unless you do an upgrade. I do gear swaps pretty often at my home so I would change them. If I didn't know how to do gear swaps myself AND I didn't tow anything then I would stick with the 3.73's.

As I stated the Diesel would help but I suggested at least a 4.10, but as reading earlier posts in this thread doesn't help your situation any being stcuck with 3.73's, perhaps aftermarket is your best solution.

When I bought my 05 duramax, I was wondering the same thing about the gears. After doing weeks of research, I found out that all duramax come onlyl with 3:73 gears. Now, I am going with a 12" lift on my diesel. I've been to 4 lift shops and they all tell me I do not need to re-gear. I'm not one to know much about the gears but I keep getting the same thing from all shops..its a diesel you dont need to re-gear. Diesel's have a lot of torque and blah blah blah blah. Now I am getting the Rolling Big Power Exhaust Stage II kit. I'll be at 470 hp and over 895 lbs of torque.

    • Thank you.  I really appreciate the well wishes.  I'm an engineer in the telecom industry, I know hardly anything about marketing.  Over the years I did some videos for nonprofits and web sites for small businesses and the seed was planted.  Agree with over-buying, I started shooting on an iPhone before I got my first DSLR and tripod.   I'm looking at trucks with potentially 150,000+ miles to keep the cost of entry low while focusing on the client experience and equipment.  Good wireless mics for interviews, the right lenses & lighting to look professional.  But I don't want to be late or break down, the stress of emptying a trailer & securing a rental truck right before a gig would negate any savings from buying a junker.  So anything that leaks water, has extensive rust, or generally unreliable I'd like to avoid.   Does GM/Chevy overbuild these trucks for upfitting?  I talked to a local upfitter, they sometimes tie lights & other 12V into existing circuits, which I always thought was bad.  Which is why I enjoyed the AUX upfit switches on previous trucks (odd they mostly come with off-road or work truck packages).
    • i guess it might be depending on the type of driving. my 2.7 has 120k miles, changed the plugs at 70k and it runs as good as new. i have not used any injector cleaner
    • GM's are stainless and have a fairly robust powder coating, although, still not worth $850 in my opinion. They will hold up a lot better than their cheaper steel aftermarket counterparts.   What I like about the GM step bars is dealers will often equip their dealer stock with them. Lots of margin. Which means a lot of people end up buying them because they're already on the truck, even if they don't like them. So it's pretty easy to find brand new takeoffs with hardware on Marketplace and Craigslist for about $250.   That's what I did for my crew cab. I wanted ZR2 rock rails for the look, but with the ability to bolt up GM's assist step package. From GM it's about a $2500 accessory all in. The old folks in my life can't get in the truck without steps. I found the whole package on marketplace for $180.
    • I am really glad I found this post and this site... We have a 2022 1500 refresh LTZ that has these problems: - forward collision avoidance warning light - lane keep assist unavailable - adaptive cruise control unavailable   The truck was bought as a new leftover in 2023, so it was still under the 3/36 B to B when it went in for these problems earlier this year. It has been at the dealer on and off now for about 110 days now. These are some of the things they have done that I can read on the service tickets. - replace/add ground straps (4) - check all battery cables and vlts - replace serial data gateway module - replace front view camera - numerous reprogramming - a few calibrations (apparently ending with 'learned') Last week when I had it back the truck had those 3 warnings every time we used it except for 3 times. On three separate occasions the truck started and ran perfectly with no (zero) warning messages or warning lights lit - everything worked perfectly. Over that same time period the truck did not work on every other 'key' cycle which I would estimate at 60+ cycles. On those estimated 57 cycles it had the same 3 problems each and every time.   It is back at the dealer now - can anyone help at all with what the true problem might be?  Or possibly what can be ruled out leaving a lower number of possibilities? Thank you very much for any help you may be able to supply....
    • As for the step bars, friend did just that, bought some cheap ones and we are in Michigan and they turned to rust in less than a year.  In 3 yrs he had to replace one of them because they rusted out from the inside even though he kept after them cleaning and polishing etc. Had to drive 300 miles (to Chicago area) to find a reg cab wt, he ordered one and dealer never got it and with winter approaching (plow truck) he needed fo find one ASAP.  Furd dealer found him one but he choose to drive to get a GMC.    Just what you can expect with cheap stuff, LOW quality.
