Auto to Manual Tranny Swap

Recommended Posts

I am considering buying a Silverado 1500 4x4. The only problem is that I have not been able to find and acceptable truck with a manual transmission. How hard is it to do a swap? Is there a bolt-in kit available? Will a tranny swap present a problem with the computer? Are some years easier to deal with than others?

Thanks,

Jeff

I would love to get an answer to this as well for my 2002 Tahoe. The 4l60E is the worst part of the vehicle.

I posted this question before and people thought I was nuts.

AS far as ordering a new truck,

You can't get the 5.3L with a manual transmission if that is what you are looking for.

As far as swapping you will need at least:

Remove complete dash to install clutch pedal assembly.

cut hole in floor for shifter

remove full center console if truck is equiped and replace with short console/jump seat.

install manual trans engine harness

install manual trans ECM

if truck has auto-trac transfer case, it must be replaced with a manual shift case (which will require another hole in the floor)

install manual steering column

remove trans cooling parts.

install master cylinder on firewall.

I am sure I am forgetting a bunch of stuff, but you get the idea. It is a bunch of work to make the value of your truck (Tahoe especially hit rock bottom).

I don't mind a manual trans truck, in fact I like it in some configurations. But a manual truck is hard to sell.

I had a 95 K1500 ext. cab Z71, loaded up with everything. 5.7L and a 5 spd.

Loved the truck, but when I bought a Tahoe it took me forever to sell the thing. Finally that one guy came along that wouldn't drive anything but a stick.

If you do go through with the swap, I would reccomend that you use a heavier 5spd than the ones offered in the 1/2tons. Maybe a ZF 6 spd. :banghead:

It is VERY hard to do a swap.

No kit available, but all bolt on parts.

Yes, the PCM controls the engine and transmission, and you'll need a different one.

Before the automatics went electronic (about 1993) this was easier.

If you're buying new consider ordering . . . it'll even save you money. The 2500HD 6.0L with NV4500 5 speed (granny low and overdrive too! :seeya: ) is not all that rare, if that'll meet your needs.

I'll agree with the poster above who says manuals are harder to sell. I tried to sell my 2500HD for a while without much luck (it was 2WD as well), but when I traded it on the Suburban the dealer said they had a buyer that was waiting for a used 6-speed D-max, and that 2WD was fine with him.
