6 litre vortec question

Hi all, just purchased a 2003 Silverado with the 6 litre vortec and was wondering what the horsepower rating from the factory is

Does it strike anyone else as odd the the pickup that is supposed to haul big loads gets the least horsepower? I realize the other vehicles tow but WTH? I guess it's getting to be all about the $$$.

There is less weight on the pick-up, if you look, there should be the same weight:power ratio between the models. This helps keep the insurance rates down.

That sounds about right...makes sense.

In the truck it will generate 300 HP @ 4400 RPM. However shift occurs near 5200 RPM which puts the engine at 290 HP @ PEAK. Why? When GM creates these numbers they include the impact of torque management. GM assumes the Trucks are to be capable of towing their advertised capacities without failure. So as the engine revs passed 4400 RPM Torque Management pulls timing advance to reduce HP during a shift. They pull timing early so it is seemelss to the driver that there is a HP loss. The Denali's have less Torque Management which allows for the LQ4 engine to build power near redline.

Hmm...very interesting. So does this rule apply with cars as well?? IE- Z28, Corvette??

I can understand the unloaded weight power ratio thing. I don't see too many burbs or denalis with 2 buckets of stone in the back, or is this what you're saying about more torque management for the trucks. Since the trucks are more likely to haul full loads they cut horsepower to save drive trains? Forgive my ignorance.

Keep in mind here, the transmissions are electronic and shift based on RPM, load and driving style. If you have the pedal to the floor, the tranny is going to hold on longer. HP is caculated by a computer and the specs given are max values. That is why no two engines have the same HP specs at the same RPM. HP is not the thing to look at here, you need to look at the torque. HP is a great thing, but the torque is what will pull the load. the HP just helps it along. If you look at the inpports, they have a high HP and a low torque, that is why they need the high RPM's to get HP up.

Horsepower is a measurment of time, Torque is a measurment of power.

 

HP is how quickly you can make the torque you have on tap.

 

In saying that, you could see why when it comes to towing, HP isn't the magic number.

 

Look at the stats on diesel engines if you need a good example of this.
