Who has successfully tinted their glass???

Has anyone successfully laid down window tint without bubbles, dirt etc? I have tried numerous times and always seem to get a dust speck or a small bubble or two. Last truck I had the door glass done by a local company. 1/2 hour later and it was perfect, of course it was done behind closed doors so I could see how or what they did?

Air bubbles...yes

Dirt...yes and no

 

I wish I knew how those guys do what they do too. However, I tinted my T/A a few years back and only ended up with a few tiny specs of dirt on the back window...and that back glass was no piece of cake either. It was my first attempt and I had the doors apart and the rear window removed, so I did it with the glass horizontal on the bench...not exactly what they guys in the shop do.

 

IMHO, it is absolutely amazing that they can do it, but that is why they get paid to do it and I will never do it again.

I watched the lady tint my windows a couple years ago.

 

She scrubbed the glass with rubbing alcohol with cheese cloth first.

 

When she was ready to put the tint on, she used a TON of soapy water in a spray bottle on both sides of the tint. She put it in place, then used a soft rubber squeegie (sp) to rub out the bubbles. She just kept rubbing and rubbing, center to edge for about 5 minutes on each piece and applying more soapy water each time to keep from scratching the film on the inside.

 

Mine are perfect! When I left, there were two or three very small bubbles about the size of a pin head that I could see and they disappeared in a few days, just as she said they did.

 

 

Looks like magic to me, but it is what she did!

 

 

 

She did say before she started that there may be a few imperfections because glass is NOT smooth. It is made of compressed sands and there can be very small imperfections that window tint will magnify.

 

Like I said, mine are perfect!

I have tinted mine. The secret is to clean the glass well and clean it again. When you think it is clean have your tint ready, cover the glass with soapy water and squeegie is dry then spray it again and apply the tint. This should get you almost perfectly clean glass. As for the bubbles, you just have to keep working them until they are out. Takes practice, but you will get it with practice.

Hey guys new on here. I have watch a lot of cars getting tint put on. The key is to wash wash wash. When you think it's clean clean it one more time. Another thing it depend how clean the area your working in and how clean your truck is. Air born dust is a bitch. If your doing your windows in place cut the tint on the outside. Wash your window really well (on the outside) wet the window and spread baby powder over the window, trust me on this. it will get kinda messy but it works. them put the tint on the outside ad use the squeegy(sp) one line across the middle, this will hold the tint in place. Then you can put a light inside your truck, depends on how dark of tint your useing. Use a really sharp knife and cut the tint to match the window you can cut it a little big just to be sure. once you got that cut have a large piece of glass that you can fit your tint on. Wet the glass down and stick your tint down and wash down the tint with the water and baby soap mixtuer. Go back and wash your window (this time inside) used a razor blade to make sure the glass is completly clean. leave some fresh water on the glass. Go and peel off the tint backing and wash down the sticky side of the tint. Then very carefully get it inside the truck. the water on both the window and tint will let you move it around until you have it in the right position. then wipe out all the water, from the middle to the outside. Use a paper towel with the squeegy(sp) so you don't rip the tint. If the window rools down you should try to leave about an 1/8" from the edge of the glass. This will help keep the tint from getting peeled off by the weather stripping. also make sure you go under the weather stripping on the bottom part of the window. Depending how warm it is where your working the tint may cure as quick as 12 hours. I'm not expert on this, this is just what I have picked up from watching my buddy tint cars. I think in the end it's just easier to get it done but there something to be said about doing things your self. Hope this helped. Later

I tried to tint my windows once in high school and it ended up looking like the toilet seat from the local McDonalds................................ I paid to have the windows tinted in my 2002. Lifetime warranty and no bubbles, dirt, dust or flaws. Pay for what you get, it guess

Awesome info. I was putting the tint on the inside of the glass to try and cut it to shape. Really hard, outside make so much sense. Thanks for the info. I figure a roll of tint is $12 at Walmart or Carquest. For that I'll give it a shot again.
