New Trailblazer

My local Chevy dealer must really be hard up for sales as they've called me 4 times in the last week trying to sell me a Trailblazer.

They are offering a brand new 2004 thats fully loaded for $24K. They started at $38K and just keep coming down every time they call back. If I wait long enough they pay me to take it off their hands.

Anyways,they said I have two choices for engines,the 5.3 liter V-8 or IIRC the 4.2 liter straight 6. It would be my wifes comuter car and she'd never be towing anything. As of now I'm leaning towards the 6.

Any thoughts on the engine choice?

A V8 TB for 24K?

There are no real engine mods yet for the 4.2L I-6 engine. Get a V8 if you want some performance addons.

Go with the I6, it's got some power and the V8 is going to be a gas hog. Isn't the V8 only available on the EXT?

You will wanna kick yourself in the butt later if you don't get the 5.3L and for 24K how could anyone pass that deal up

I have an EXT with the I6 and that thing is the gas hog.It averages between 15 and 16 MPG with about 80% city driving.I don't see how the V8 could be much worse.The I6 does make good power and sounds cool at full throttle,but you can't beat the torque of the V8.If your going to buy the truck I say get the big motor,it sure won't hurt the resale value down the road.You also said it will not be used for towing,but will it ever be full of people?Take 7 people and a full tank of 25 gallons for a ride,you will surely be glad you got the V8.If you do decide to get the I6 make sure it has at least a 3.73 rearend.Trust me on this.

Same thing for me. I get 15.x MPG with the I6 in my LT.

As sweet as this deal was,we decided not to buy the new rig. I reeeeealy hate car payments and wasn't looking forward to starting payments again. We have 15K saved towards a new car so we'll save for another year or two,and then just pay cash for whatever my wife decides to buy. Thanks for the opinions.

As much as I love my '02 Envoy, it does eat gas. I introed My wife to her '03 Rendezvous and she loves it. She gets 23+ around town (300+ tank), much better Hwy, and I understand the engines for '04-05 are going to be a bit more powerful than hers. If you don't like Buick's there are like platforms with Caddy, Chevy, I think Saturn (?) and I just saw Pontiac will have it next year. It handles well and we took it cross country x 2 last May in total comfort. 39K miles on it now.

I envy your ability to pay cash and the patience to wait.
