jhm Posted January 10, 2005 Posted January 10, 2005 I have read a lot about people who want to disable the DRL'S. I have even seen schematics on line at some site for people who hate DRL's. I have one out now, I am thinking just let the other one go til it burns out and not replacing them. I can think of no adverse effects to doing this, anyone else?
Wingnut Posted January 10, 2005 Posted January 10, 2005 Other than the off chance of getting hit by a semi that didn't see you...I don't see any ill effects. Sorry, I just don't get why some people hate them so much. Heck, you can't even see them (as long as you're driving like you're supposed to, instead of like Indiana Jones). Totally unobtrusive safety feature in my opinion.
Willys33 Posted January 10, 2005 Posted January 10, 2005 I put amber bulbs in my 2000. Looks better and still makes the truck noticeable to oncoming traffic. I want every chance that the dummy in the other car will see me...lol. IMHO, the clear bulbs look like crap.
jhm Posted January 10, 2005 Author Posted January 10, 2005 I have nothing against the idea of having DRL's, just dont like replacing them. They are on all the time so they don't last. Besides, the guy driving the semi is probably so close to falling asleep you would need search lights to get his attention. Those little parking lamp bulbs aint gonna do it!
ness5575 Posted January 10, 2005 Posted January 10, 2005 correct me if I am wrong, but i think on the obs trucks there arent different bulbs for the drl, instead they just light the headlights up - hence the need for wiring schematics, etc. it isnt as simple as removing the bulb cause then there would be no lights!

Fortunate for people with NBS GM trucks, they are independent.

Where I live there are a few mandatory day-light safety zones – that is, must have some sort of headlight on even in bright sun. With DRL’s I don’t even have to take notice of those signs anymore. I’m automatically legit. If you're going to let your lights burn out, at least remove the bulbs so they won’t corrode in the socket. If that got bad you could find yourself with a totally corroded DRL fixture. Not good at time of re-sale or trade-in. Perhaps you could find a short piece of wood dowel, about what? 1 inch long and ¾ inch diameter? to snug in there. Wrap in a small bit of heavy plastic sheeting so it will fit in tight but without distorting the socket receptacle. gnutruk
GM-Tech Posted January 10, 2005 Posted January 10, 2005 Yes, some vehicles have an extra filament in the headlights for the DRL's. Fortunate for people with NBS GM trucks, they are independent. On GM vehicles that use the headlights for the DRLs, there is not an extra filament in the headlamp. What they do is run power through the two lamps in series, rather than in parallel like in normal headlight mode, to get the somewhat dimmer headlights.

As I said, some vehicles DO have an extra filament for the DRL's. The guy at one of the auto parts places told me some people get real angry when they find out they have to replace a perfectly good headlight to get the DRL's working again. I have also heard of some Mazda's(?) that use a low voltage relay to deliver a lower voltage to the DRL'S.
az'03Silverado Posted January 10, 2005 Posted January 10, 2005 I get an insurance discount for DRLs. So, it's a matter of honesty for me to keep mine working. I just put amber bulbs in and they look great. If you get the 'LL' kind (long life) they last a really long time.
c4cruiser Posted January 11, 2005 Posted January 11, 2005 I went with amber bulbs in the DRL's on my 99 black Silverado Z71. They look better in amber and stand out in the sunshine. I don't have any problems with DRL's at all. Having separate bulbs for them instead of simply reducing the voltage to the headlights is a better deal. If I didn't want them, I would simply pull the bulbs.
sonjaab Posted January 11, 2005 Posted January 11, 2005 DRLs are a PIA.......On the NBS just pull the bulbs ! Driving with 1 out is just ASKING 5-0 to stop and talk to you ! Heres a site to disable DRLS and Auto ons...... http://www.lightsout.org
MS3DALE Posted January 11, 2005 Posted January 11, 2005 I'm sorry but I'll say it again, If you can't see me coming towards you in my truck in broad daylight without DRL's...............YOU SHOULDN'T BE ON THE ROADS!!! I don't like DRL's or auto.headlamps, never have-never will. The only reason some car manufacters put them in is because of people who are to stupid to turn on there own lights when its dark, raining or foggy. I've have seen people like this and I cuss them royally because its there fault DRL's and auto.headlamps are on cars and trucks today. OK I'll get down off of my soapbox now...I just had to vent a little

Back up lights are not even required, they are a convenience to you the driver. That is what an inspector from motor vehicles told me when I had my '65 'stang inspected. Canada requires all cars to have DRL's.
mcreyaufmiller Posted January 11, 2005 Posted January 11, 2005 So here is the thing from the Motorcycleing community about DRL's. Before DRL's, motorcycles were the only vehicles on the road with a headlight on all of the time. This was the only thing that we had to set us apart from the cages that like to pull out in front of us, run into us, cut us off, etc. I do think that the DRL's are a good idea, but they need to be rethought so that the advantage is not taken from the motorcyclist.
