Remote Start

Have any of you guys purchased and installed a remote start setup on your truck? I am trying to figure out what I would like to do to my truck next and could use the input.

I have installed one in a 2002 Tahoe.

you have to have a module to by-pass the THEFTLOCK II .

DEI makes a good one.

I just installed one on my 00 ext cab. I used a relay and resistor to get around the passlock, it works, but it also pretty much renders the passlock useless. I can wire it so passlock works, but whenever I go from remote start to key in ignition I get a solid security light. It's not hard at all to install, everything is right there under the column once you remove the metal plate.

I got the remote start from NAPA, it's from www.designtech-intl.com, it's a weeny system, but it fires the truck up when I want it to. If I did it over, I'd spend the money and get a decent system.

good luck.

:) I had an Astrostart installed in Nov. Works great, def. worth 300 bucks. You can even push the button while the truck is running (when the key is in) and it will stay running while you run in the store or whatever and you can take your keys with you. It will also autostart at a certain temp say 5 degrees....anyway, great company works very well. Hope this helps...cannot help you about the installation.

I had the Viper 591XV installed a couple months ago. It is a two way system. I am unable to see the truck from where I start it at work, so it's nice to know whether the truck is running. This is my third different viper system over the years on three different trucks. I have never had a problem with any of them, and the range has become better with each new model.

I installed an UNGO on my 2002 1500HD. It also has a full security system with a remote starter. If you plan on getting an after market security system in the future, get a started and security system combo.

It is hard to get a regular remote starter to work will with an aftermarket security system. I am speaking from experience. Too many sensors to disable and remote locks to worry about.

Be careful, I had a cheap system installed on my truck and it cost me $500 to repair the damage when the system failed. From my research, the only remote starter that is useable on the chevy's is the Viper, and it must be installed by a Viper factory authorized installer. If not, you could run into the same problems that I had and end up replacing the wiring harness and the Passlock system. just my expirences.
