My what a question  . I am betting 90% say custom tune. I have done alot of research on this. If you are getting it for hp increase don't do it. A custom tune will be more noticable. From my reasearch a hypertech or comparible will add 8-11 hp. A custom tune will add 15-20 hp on a 5.3. 20 hp will be noticable 10 will not. If you are getting it to adj tire size and shift points and would like to be able to put stock rims on and reset your computor anytime you want go with the handheld. Custom tunes are more expensive and could put you down a day for changes for tire size or shift points. Plus the hand held could be resold if you sell the vehicle a custom tune cannot. just my .02

I will be buying a handheld just for the slight increase in hp and to adjust for tire size and shifting. I am at a toss up between the superchips and hypertech.

Here's my suggestion: http://www.pcmforless.com/

Just like facn8me said, you can't beat a custom tune. I don't have personal experience with the HPPIII, just what I've learned through research and alot of time on the forums here and at www.ls1tech.com. I do have personal experience with PCMforLess, and I must say that my truck is night and day...Bryan really knows his stuff, and his customer service is absolutely awesome. Best bang for the buck IMO...$250 after the $125 core charge, still cheaper than a handheld and you won't believe the power that's been hidden under your hood by the detuned factory PCM.

Well, I don't have the year or motor you're interested in, but I used it on my 97 Z71 with the 5.7. Not really a noticeable difference. It did help to recalibrate the speedometer for the larger tires, and I could feel the firmer shifting, but for the cost, could have done without.

Has anyone used the HYPERTECH cpu programmer for a 2001 z71? If so could you really tell the difference and was it worth the price? 5.3 engine.....Thanks

Wester's!! The only way to go.

I had one for my '97 Z71 and I did notice a difference. I'm not really sure if it was from any additional HP & torque or the higher shift points. I never timed any 0-60mph, but it was just seat of the pants feel. I just picked up a '01 Z71 and was looking to get one for it. I haven't found any dyno numbers other than what is on the hypertech site for a 2000 5.3 (+17hp +19Torque) . Here is a link to it http://www.hypertech.com/images/dynocharts/2000gm5.3L.jpg

i have the super chips. it gives an option for tow mode and i can tell the difference, and a huge difference when towing in tow mode, but i might have tried the custom tune if i had known about it before. on the programers you can take the tune out before you take it in for repair and if the dealer has to reflash you pcm to fix you problem you can reinstal the program when you get home. i think the most bang for the buck is headers and exhaust i would start there for more HP

The dual fuel tune on Hypertech is a waste. I just purchased a hpp3 for my truck and installed it. (((((The shift points, firmness and rev limiter really wake up the truck though)))). Just dont expect anything but spark knock from the fuel tuning. Just leave that at stock.
