Help Needed Truck will not Start

A friend of mine has a 02 1500Hd with 6.0Lthat will not start.

All interior lights , radio and dash lights work fine, but when

you turn the key to start there is nothing.

The funny thing is that it does this about once a week and

then it will be fine.

 

Any suggestions would be Great. thanks

Sound slike starter or the neutral safty switch. just my .02

I had it one night after work my pickup wouldn't start but all interior lights and radio worked. I came back inside and did a quick search on this forum and found a suggestion. I went back outside, put the pickup in neutral and it started right up.

Make sure that the truck is totally in park and not stuck between Park and Reverse. Had that happen to me once.

I had that happen to me but think it was mainly due to the weather it was in teens. I put the truck in neutral and on the second or third time of trying to start it. It started up have not had the problem since.

It may be the CPS (Crank Position Sensor). IIRC there is a TSB about the CPS.

 

My 01' 2500HD recently had the CPS go bad. It acted just as you decribed. It would be fine for a week or two and then it wouldn't start. It finally got bad enough that it wouldn't start at all and had to be towed to the dealer. It didn't take them long to pinpoint the problem,and all is fine now.

I think with a bad CPS the engine will still turn over. His won't even engage the starter, which sounds like the neutral safety switch, or a bad starter relay/switch.

I had a bad CPS once, but it started fine about 4 hours later. I wasn't sure what it was, so I shotgunned the CPS and it never did it again...

If the CPS was bad, it would crank but not start...might be the ignition switch also. Of course, check the battery and cables for corrosion and resistance and the such.

Good point Bud! If it won't crank, turn on the headlights and try it again. If the headlights go out, it's probably in the battery or cables. If the headlights stay on full bright, it isn't even trying to energize the starter.

Yeah, happens a lot with the battery cables. The inside one may have good connection, but the outside one may not.
