All aluminum 5.3?

Recommended Posts

It's been a looooooooooooong time since I was here last. I used to have a 2500HD, but in a moment of stupidity, I traded it in on a 300C last May. :D

Anyway, I'm back and jonsin for a GMC 1500 extended cab and wondered if anyone has any info on the all aluminum 5.3 that is currently being offered?

If there has been other posts on this, please ignore my non-search capabilities and direct me to any links. Thanks!

Welcome back Steve!!!

Looks like you already have some good info...  :D

Hey Shane! I spoke with a sales mgr at a GMC dealer late this afternoon and

they want to give me 31-32,000 for the 300C, so things are definately looking good

for me to get a new truck. I may even inquire about a 2500HD SLE. I miss

my 02 Chevy 2500HD BIGTIME! Holy crap, whoever got my truck got a sweet deal. I haven't seen it around at all since I traded it last May.

Thanks for the info in the PM. I noticed my post had that little thingamabobby in the lower corner but no one else's did. I was thinking I did something dumb :wtf: LOL

I need to talk to you about your programmer. Are you happy with it? Did you remove the TM? That was one thing that I didn't like about my last truck, but this 300C has it at least as bad and there is no way to take it out. No one wants to take the time to crack DCX's computer code, so I'm stuck with exhaust and CAI mods. That's it. :D

I like the things GM is doing with the 5.3, and I'm ready to jump back in to the mod game. It's an addiction. I just wonder if GM is still having problems with driveshafts. After I think 2 DS replacements in my 01 Z71, I pretty much gave up on 1/2 tons.

Thanks bgdsub72 for that info. That's more than I could find anywhere about the all aluminum 5.3. I wonder if the cylinder liners have somewhat taken care of the CSK that seems to plague these vortecs. Not that it ever really bothered me, my 99 Tahoe, 01 Z71 and 02 2500HD all had it to some degree and they all ran great(cept for the DS dealie on the 01).

If I get it this weekend I'll be sure to post pics. In the meantime, here is what I traded my 2500HD on. Sad isn't it?

The alloy 5.3 is suppose to be code LS4

It'll also show up in the Bonneville and Impala, FWD though but with 6speed auto.

LS4 QS 1500 ECSB and with a 6 speed would be a nice ride.

The V-12 2006 Escalade is said (GM Inside News) to be getting a 6 speed auto

Well, I bit the bullet! I got an 05 Sierra SLE extended cab Z71, carbon metallic with the aluminum 5.3. I just got it today at noontime and only drove it home(about 10 miles), but dang! It feels good to be in a truck again! Can't wait to start the mods.

The dealer is cutting me a check for 1500(loyalty discount, wife's car is an Olds). Let's see, good start would be tonneau cover, bedliner, new stereo w/ subwoofer, catback exhaust, programmer for the TM among other things, tires, etc. Well, so far I've spent well over the 1500 bucks!

Should have it all done within a month or two though.

I'm strange I know, but there is no smell like the off gassing smell of new GM plastic. Sniiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiff, ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!! :wtf:

Do you know what the MPG ratings are on the new 5.3? I am curious as to when deplacement on demand might become available. I guess it might wait until the redesign.

It's sweet! :banghead: I did notice scratches on the right side of the bed near the cab, and 2 on the tailgate. They don't seem to be through the clearcoat, so I'm going to have them try to fix them. I know, it's a truck and it's gonna get scratched, but I wouldn't mind so much if they were scratches that I caused. Not the dealer or the guy unloading them from the hauler.

I'm going by memory of my 01 Z71 with the 5.3 that was rated at what, 285 hp? It feels about 20-25 hp stronger than my last one. The idle appears to be much smoother too. My last 5.3 had a strange whistle to it, but this one so far appears to be dead quiet. To early to tell about CSK. I drove it to church this morning and we got about 1-2 inches of snow so naturally, DelDOT felt it best to coat the roads in about 4 inches of salt. Needless to say, she is DIRTY!

The carbon metallic is a VERY nice color. My 2500HD was charcoal gray and this is even darker. Almost like black with a metallic in it.

I haven't been on any long highway trips yet, but it will definately be interesting to see what kind of MPG it will get. It has 3.42's with the locking diff. it seems you cannot get 3.73's or 4.10's with the GMC, but I don't mind so much. Nothing I will tow will be more than 6-7,000 lbs anyway.

Here's the short list of upgrades that I should have done by the end of March.

I'm gonna go out and take a dirty pic of her. BRB :D

I'll have to wait until a sunny, warm day to get it washed and better pics that really show the carbon paint.

How similar is the 5.3L in the pickups to the one in the new Monte Carlo/Impala SS??

Thanks! :banghead:

Yikes, I don't know about that one. The 5.3 going in to the Impala is supposed to be rated at 303 hp, but unfortunately, that is all I know. I've been out of the GM loop since last May. I can't believe all that has changed since then. :D

A note to all that have responded, thanks for the congrats. It's nice to be back in a truck, and back here at GM-TC!
