component crossovers

These are questions for anyone who has installed a component speaker system in a 2000-03 Silverado. Where did you mount (install, hide) the crossovers? Did you use the factory speaker wires or pull new ones into the door? I have a 2001 EX-Cab and plan on installing a set of components soon. Also, does anyone know what size wrench the neg post on the battery takes? Thanks in advance.

the '01 has the same style factory component setups as the later trucks correct?? if so you can actually mount everything to the door panel. it's very easy, and the crossover will mount on the back side of the door panel. i'll try and get my buddy to take a pic the next time he does one at work. i don't have any from when i taught him how. but if you turn the door panel over, you'll see where you can mount it.

I recently installed component speakers in my '04 Sierra x/cab. I'm certainly no expert, but I did do some research first. I considered puting the crossovers in the doors - it would have been the easiest solution - but I understand that the inside of the door is a fairly hostile environment for electronics. And I wanted access to the crossovers without needing to remove the door panels (although most crossovers realy don't require much access). Anyway, I installed both crossovers on the amp rack behind the back seat.

I also elected not to use the factory speaker wiring. That meant 2 sets of new speaker wires to each front door (for woofer & tweeter). I just julled them through the existing door wire-boots.

Not sure what size wrench to use on the battery. I think it might be 7mm???

Good luck on your upcoming project.

Thanks for the replies! Any and all comments are appreciated. Should be a fun install. I am surprised that wingnut and a few others haven't chimed in. I'm sure there are more people who have installed component speakers in their trucks. It would be great to hear your experiences.

I put mine in the doors, and I used the wire that came with the components. I thought about mounting them on my amp rack behind the rear seat, but I don't need access to them, and it's less wire to pull if you mount them in the doors.

I usually only get on here in the wee hours of the morning, and not every day. :smash:

I used new wires, they're just a (relatively) cheap way of insuring good sound.

Oh, I bolted the crossovers inside the doors, about 6 inches up. I figure that if I manage to get 6 inches of water inside my doors, my components will be the least of my worries.

I just finished doing an install of a pair component speakers in a friends Tahoe. It has the same door panels as my Silverado. The door panels came off pretty easy and after looking at the back of the panel there is an obvious place to mount the crossovers. It is in the bottom front corner of the panel. Some velcro attached to the crossover and some to the panel, turned out pretty slick. Mounting the tweeter was a little bit of a problem because the hole from the factory tweeter was larger than the new tweeter and the flush mounting system wasn't that great but I made it work. :D Lets hear it for duct tape! :chevy: It was nice to be able to practice on someone elses install before tackling mine. Thanks again!

i mounted a pair of infinity components in my doors of my '03 sierra. i used the stock wiring...mounted the crossovers inside the door panel using double sided tape, mounted the speakers in the original location (just had to drill a couple holes) as for my tweeters, i cut out my own mounting plates out of sheetmetal to the same size as the factory plastic mounts, drilled out the center to mount the tweeter flush, then drilled 2 holes in each plate and mounted them to the door panels using those plastic pushpin thingies. i've had no problems and it all sounds great.
