2005: P/S sucks when not moving?

My truck: 2005 CC 1500.

This truck is quite larger than my 98 explorer sport.

I dont make a habit of turning the wheel while not moving, but in some parking lots (especially at school) i just dont have the room to move while turning the wheel.. and i often have to cut it sharp.

Ive noticed it sometimes feels like i dont have P/S at all unless im moving. higher rpms arent even needed, i just need to be rolling. Im sure this is normal- but it's such a PITA.

Anyone else experience this?

I haven't noticed anything in my '04.. except that occaisionally I will lose P/S momentarily while shifting from R to D and turning from one steering wheel lock to the other. Seems pretty easy to steer at a stop to me, though. That said I upgraded from a '91 C1500 that REALLY took some muscle to steer! Once or twice I have steered the '04 and used the brakes without the engine on, moving it down the driveway (hill) and not wanting to start 'er up just to do that. Takes just about everything my skinny butt has to turn it, and I can't move it at all at a stop!

If it really is hard, maybe have the dealer let you try out a few other similar models, and if indeed there is something wrong, you know what to do.

It's probably computer controlled speed sensitive steering...am I correct? Maybe it needs fixin' because at low idle or high idle, if you don't have sufficient pressure there at a stop it could point to a regulator that's not increasing the pressure at the low speeds.

It seems to be an intermittent problem.......my 04 does it, my 02 does not. Same story with the GMT800s I have a work, some do, some dont. Take it in if you want, but I think it is pretty normal.

Keep in mind also, some p/s units are only assist units, not full power units.  Welcome to the new mellinum.

Unless you've got a reference for a vehicle that doesn't have a steering shaft that is actually connected to the steering box all power steering units are "assist"; some are just more assisting than others.

Good luck in getting it fixed

I had the same problem on my 03 ext 4x4.

Every time I took it in they couldn't get it to do it. It kept getting worse and happened more often. Finally I was able to go on a drive with the service writer and he experenced it.

It's fixed now. It has a new steering box. The truck is great again, not only did it fix the lack of power steering in parking lot type manuvers, but the truck is tight and don't wander all over the road anymore.

You just have to keep taking it back until they experience it. It's not normal for a truck like the dealers say. When they feel it they won't think you're crazy.

Like I said good luck.

I had the same problem, It got worse over time to the point the steering wheel was almost impossible to turn left at a dead stop. Made the PS pump whine like a baby too. Dealer replaced the steering box under warranty last month, so far all is well.

cool thanks for the info guys.

I dont have time to take it to the dealer now, im busy with school work/working to pay for this truck.

I can live with it for the time being- if it does get worse ill drop if off at the dealer during the summer when i can use the motorcycle to get around town.

again, thanks for the replies- exactly the feedback i was expecting.
