New to GM and new to the forum!!!

2005 Envoy XL SLT, I have a Nav Radio and when the vehicle is in motion it disables the buttons that would allow you to change the destination while enroute. I have to come to a stop in order to change the destination.

Does anyone know how to change this feature so that I can pick a destination while moving?

Thanks in advance for any input.

Remove the VSS wire from the 12 pin connector on the back of the nav headunit.

THe VSS wire is the vehicle speed signal and it is in the "E" position on the connector, it should be a dark green wire with a white tracer.

BBSilverado, Nice detail!

Does the VSS wire only serve the purpose to disable the buttons or will the Nav speed be effected ( time to destination, etc) because the unit will no longer sense the speed of the vehicle.

The next question you should have seen coming.

How to get to the back of the unit looks to be quite a task or does the plastic/wood grain panel that covers it remove easily?

Thanks

It will not change the destination times, you set those yourself by changing the speeds for the different types of roads involved in the route. That is done on the nav setup screen. The VSS wire only tells the nav unit that you are moving and the speed at what you are going, it doesn't really affect any other function, some of us that have added the nav unit to our vehicles did not add this wire to our setup and it functions like normal. I didn't add the vss wire at first and then added it later and didn't see a bit of difference with or without it.

the headunit can be removed by removing the bezel (dash trim piece around it) and then removing the 3 screws holding the unit in.

It has been awhile since I worked on a TB or Envoy and I know the bezel is a little bit more envolved than it is on a fullsize platform. I think it requires a little bit more unscrewing but it does come off rather easy. ( the fullsize comes off without any screws)

The nav is supposed to be a bit smoother with the VSS available, and will also function when the GPS signal is interrupted by obstructions. I don't know if they work in conjunction with a built-in compass or directional gyro to do dead reckoning while the sat signal is obscured or not...but I know for a fact the VSS will be used to update your position at least in a straight line.

I added a switch on the VSS wire on mine, so that I can interrupt it as necessary to access all of the functionality. It was fairly trivial to do...see this post:

P.S....anyone know if these things have a gyro or compass in them?
