you want an electric fan, they are better than a mechanical in many aspects.

And 3.42's are just fine, I'm sure they put in a different torque converter to accomidate the acceleration.

The factory went to 3.42s to allow them to increase their rated mileage on the window sticker from 18 MPG to 19 MPG on their pickups. For an unloaded pickup, this ratio works OK. However, I don't like the trans downshifting for every little hill and it always seems to be lugging. I chose the 4.10s and they are fine. There is probably 1-2 MPG less than the 3.42s, but I like how the vehicle drives. The 4.10s are an option, so you need to find a dealer who has one or trade another dealer for one.

The electric fans are nothing but a positive feature. First they only operate when needed. The water pump mounted fan (even with a fluid clutch) is always turning, making noise, which takes HP and decreases mileage. The water pump should last longer because it does not have that heavy fan on the end of it's shaft, wearing out the bearing.

It for Federal fuel requirments. The 05,s have the electric fans and 3:42 axles along with more Torque & HP. With gas prices this might be the best buy unless your towing a heavy trailer all the time.

My 05 CrewCab 4x4 with 4.10s will do 18.2 to 18.5 at 68mph and 17.2 to 17.5 at 72 mph.I wouldn't buy a pickup or SUV with 3.42s.Nothing wrong with the electric fans at all.

I just purchased an 2005 yukon xl with the 3.42 rear end and in my opinion it was a big mistake, I liked my 2000 with the 4.10s much better. electric fan is ok.

I hate to disagree here but with todays fuel prices 4.10s are a big mistake unless you do a lot of towing. And even if you do a lot of towing get the more powerful engines and still get 3.42 gears.

If you can get 18mpg with 4.10s think what you could get with 3.42s!!!

If you have deep pockets or you don't feel like you're being robbed everytime you buy a tank of fuel then carry on.

Been there done that!!! My GMC now has a 3.08 in it , up from a 3.42!!!

I also think the milage from 3.42 down to a 4.10 will give you a difference of more than 1 or 2 mpg. My hot rod big block El Camino dropped almost 4mpg when I went from a 2.73 gear to a 3.31 gear. With an overdrive it got 19 on the highway but dropped to 14-15 when I went to the 3.31. Our full size fuel injected trucks will lose milage too.

Grrr I don't know what gear ratio I have on my 99 Z71 but I HATE the fact that the thing can't hold 75 MPH going up a not so steep hill and has to shift down to hold the speed, really TICKS ME OFF!

What I don't understand is why it has go through a full-scat acceleration, as if in a race, while using the cruise control mode----different subject. I have always griped about the cruise control going into full scat when it downshifts, as opposed to a soft downshift when you are using your foot. Anyway..........

Yeah, I have a 15 mile stretch of road in which every vehicle I have had using an automatic transmission would go through an intense exercise of gear hunting. Didn't matter if it were a car or truck. On this same route, I just routinely drop the selector out of overdrive (D) into 3rd and there is no hunting. Gas mileage doesn't take a significant hit and the truck seems happy.

I honestly can't remember the specifics well, but as a kid, on this same stretch, I don't recall any of my dad's cars / trucks downshifting (1960s era) like today's vehicles do. I really wonder if the automatics back then had "D" as today's 3rd? In other words, they had 1, 2, and D. Or even, LO, HIGH, and DRIVE. No overdrive (today's "D").

And finally, one of my first pickups ages ago was a 4.3 L V-6 with a standard. Man, talk about having to STIR the gear shift on that same 15 mile road. Never could find a gear that fit. Downshift - upshift - downshift - upshift....

Towing that often and living in a Basin you surely dont want 3:42's that is for sure. Everyone here has different driving situations and you have to decide on whats best for you. If you live in a fairly level part of the country and dont tow much the 3:42 would be fine. If i lived in your part of the country i probably would have 4:11's.

Under the circumstances of being in the mountains I can see the need for the gear. That wasn't clear to me in earlier post. Didn't notice the address.

Out here 4.10s are just not needed except for serious towing.

Of course...... they didn't have overdrive. Wasn't common until the late 80s.

    • You're better read than that Atlas. 😏   British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke formulated three adages that are known as Clarke's three laws, of which the third law – that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" – is the best known and most widely cited.   Stribeck and the pivotable Hersey Number isn't voodoo nor snake oil. That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Within the Hersey Equation if viscosity and viscosity is 'Dependent' on.......heat.......and.......viscosity index or the temperature to viscosity slope.    Specifically Hersey is the viscosity AT THE TEMPERATURE IN THAT LOCATION FOR THAT SLOPE.   Hydrodynamic lubrication exist when the film thickness in the location is 3X the Ra roughness of the surface. This is irrespective of the hardness of the substrate. To obtain that thickness X viscosity is required for Y velocity at Z load. That's a lot of moving parts. It is also impossible to maintain in an ICE but nearly possible with a turbine under constant load.    What does that mean? Error heavy and operate light. Wear is inevitable but the rate of wear and the milage obtainable are a function of prevailing conditions and HABITS. The only penalty is viscous drag and at fractions so low as to be well worth the effort. Double the life, half the manufacturing carbon foot print. Greed is the only impediment.    The materials generated by SwRI are the RESULT not an estimation or a hypothesis.    Don't delude yourself sir, EV's have as many pitfalls as ICE's. We just don't know what they are yet and it will take longer to sort as MARKETING and GREEDY CEO's have had more time to polish the turd they are selling.
    • You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.
    • Diesel hit $6.00 here today at the truck stop.   Payed $2.79 for E85 today too.
