Warm weather is back. So is my Stearing Clunk

Recommended Posts

I have to wonder if the cold weather does not keep the greese in that intermed. shaft more stiff, or in place better. I lived in FL and was doing this TSB every other oil change. Moved to chicago and it was fine for many of months!

Seems to be slightly comming back!

So who has this "NEW" shaft and does it actually work??

I have the "new and improved shaft". Nope, same thing. I have had two new design shafts installed and they have both failed. Thank god I am still under warranty. I am just going to wait it out and have it replaced at 35,999 miles. Hopefully GM will recognize it and extend my warranty on the shaft for awhile. Yeah right, wishful thinking. You can tell the difference because the "clunk" is a little less noticable but still annoying. This saga started when I purchased my first NBS, Oct 1 1998. You would think that 6-and-a-half years would be ample time to make an improvement. Guess not.

Thanks for the info.

Guess I will just keep greasn' it until I sell it (that day is rapidly approaching!)

I have a steering column clunk as well. I recently bought the truck and had an alarm put in. I thought it was something they done wrong while installing my alarm.

Now that I read your post I'm feeling like I may need to just grease what ever you guys are greasing. What exactly are we talking about here? I would really appreciate some help on this. This clunking is driving me crazy.

When I hit bumps I hear a clunk. I sounds as if I could shake the steering wheel and it will jiggle a little, but the steering is solid. i took of the steering panel but was not able to feel anything that was loose.

Help guys

Look up top for the sticky :announcement: intermediat steering shaft lube procedure

That is the best write-up on how to do it you are going to find.

I thought for a minute that Taaaaahoe had come back to the fold and traded in his Lincoln LS....Then I see the thread was started in a few weeks ago. Oh well there is still hope for his return.

Scroll to the top of the light duty forum and there is a detailed PM (with pictures) on the intermediate shaft lube procedure. You can buy the lube kit or the updated shaft, for that matter, and follow the procedure. Remember, under any circumstances, don't let your steering wheel spin while your doing this. It will screw up the clock spring for the air bag, and then you'll have a s&^t storm on your hands.

The shaft on my 2002 was replaced about a year a half ago. Yes the clunking and vibration is back again. Has anyone put in the Borgeson & Mullins aftermarket shaft? Did it solve the problem?

Thank You,

JCTB

If you do a search on this topic you will find that unfortunately the Borgeson unit sometimes gives a worse clunk. It's worked for some people but does not seem to be a universally viable solution at this point.
