Anyone have any more information about the 6L80? Six speeds? How will that work?

Hey Whitesnake, something's fishy about those torque numbers. Does GM make an engine that's 4.4L that has 430 ft-lbs of torque?

The 6.0 in the 2500HD specs out 360 ft-lbs.

I looked around the net for other information on this. One page I found asserted that this trans IS destined for trucks as well as cars.

It'd be a darned shame if GM all of the sudden started using this techno-fluid-dependent razor-edge-engineered 6-speed, along with some cheezy cylinder bank switching, in the 2006 2500HD's...

I have read where there is a new 6 speed Allison coming for the DMax's and the 8.1. This is the first I have heard for the 6.0s

Hmmmmm..........well if it is set up for rwd use then it can be easily adapted for use before a transfer case with a shorter tail shaft. The casing would have to be different for use in a Cadillac STS(the only rwd caddy needing that beefy of a tranny), I would also bet they will put a derivative of it in the Corvette/XLR. Those cars have rear mounted trannis though. I would also question the 4.4L statement, as the Northstar is a 4.6. Sounds like a good thing is coming, but it might be too early to get good specs. I hope it is a true six speed and not some POS like what Dodge and Ford do.........four speed auto with a couple different overdrive ratios depending on whether the engine is kicking down or upshifting. If this goes into the GMT900 it could show how technologically advanced it will be considering only the Nissan Titan and Allison tranny have five true ratios. A sixer would just one up them all.....

By the looks of it, they are planning a new supercharged Northstar 4.4L engine. The 7.0L Corvette engine looks like it could take you back and forth to work, too.

I wasnt at all questioning you, just wondering if the site got the info correct or if GM released the correct info. I think that supercharged northstar will be put in the STS V and the XLR V.......I heard something about 450- 500hp.

This article appeared on the site of the Society of Automotive Engineers, which is a fairly reputable source. I doubt that SAE would go as far as quoting a GM group VP and not have modestly correct information in the same context. This article was published in Jan-05, so it is fairly up to date information. Still, 450-500hp can happen. Nothing stops GM from exceeding expectations (something that does not happen often enough) :-)
