Hypertech Problems....need some help.

Ok, I recently installed a HPP3 on my 01 2500HD with the 6.0. I filled the tank up from empty with 93 octane from exxon and programmed for the 93 octane tune. Well i noticed that it pinged like hell as soon as i started driving it, the more gas i gave it the more it did it. I figured the computer might need some time to learn the new tune so i gave it about 50 miles and noticed that the pinging went away under normal driving conditions but when I get on it hard it did it again. I was fed up so I programmed it for the 87 tune today with 93 octane still in the tank and also added some Amaco premium 93 octane to fill it back up. I didnt ping under normal driving conditions and not really when i was about 3/4 throttle but still did under WOT. I can't figure out why its doing this and its very frustrating. So i was hoping some of yall could help me out with a few questions:

1. The mods on my motor are a volant cold air intake, throttle body spacer, Descreened MAS(I think might have something to do with it) JBA Wires and a flowmaster exhaust. The truck has 68K on it. What could be causing all this detonation?

2. Could I have harmed my motor by flooring it several times with noticeable pinging? Can pinging get worse if the motor is exposed to it for a while?

3. What Rev limit should i set my 6.0 at?

4. What should i check or tune up to help?

On a seperate note, I have alot of engine knock as well. I run 5w30 but am thinking about switching to 10w30, would this help it?

I appreciate any help yall can give me.

Do you run the 160 stat? IF so where did you get it? DO you have any detonation with your hypertech and what settings do you run it on.

I never ran a 160 in my S10 with the PP3 on the 93 tune and I don't run one on my Sierra with the Predator on the 93 tune.

I've read that some people have had problems with aftermarket hot tuned PCM's pinging after installation, especially with those running aftermarket open element intakes. I do believe that Lyndon Westers recommends cleaning the MAf and TB if pinging occurs after installation if you're using such an intake.

Give it a shot.

I use a 160 hypertech thermostat and I've never had any knocking or any other problems. I run the 93 tune .

When I got my PCMFORLESS tune, my truck was running extremely lean. Bryan cleaned everything and double checked all the intake and it was fine. I also de-screened my MAF. I think this caused that problem. The more I read about doing that, the more I think I shouldn't have done it. Alot of guys say that it screws up the readings. Anyhow, Bryan was able to adjust the tune so that it ran closer to ideal.

As for rev limiter, I know mine shifts at 5500 at WOT because the power band goes clearly up to there. She really pulls in them high rpms too!

Just because it says 93 octane does not mean that it is truly 93 octane. If I remember from a previous post, there are 2 ways to get octane, the right way and the additive way. the second provides a way to get a higher octane rating from a cheap fuel. You could have picked up a cheap fuel, try running just the good stuff and see what happens.

Don't forget that hypertec requires a 160 degree thermostat for the 93 octane tune.

No it does not, it is a option in the setup if you have one. I use 93 tune with stock stat and no ping. The mods that you did to engine may be throwing your tune way off. Mine is still bone stock otherwise and between the intake, modified air mass and flowmasters you have thrown the base line tune way out of wack. With a closed loop system you make a lot of changes you sometimes need more tune than one meant for a otherwise stock truck/engine.

I had the same problem with my 01 6.0 4x4. I called Hypertech, and they told me it was my FIPK, It was leaning out, to much air. I changed to an 87 tune and I run 92 fuel. I have noticed that the quality of fuel play a big part, I can use 92 from a Chevron and have no pinging, or use a 92 from the local 7-11 and have it ping like hell. I'm going to remove my PP3 and try somebody elses.

I was able to use the Hypertech 93 octane tune on my Av and only run 87 octane with no pinging whatsoever. The 93 tune made a big difference in power over the 87 tune. Granted, the Av doesn't have a 6.0 but I had all of the other mods listed installed.

I recently got a Radix installed and have to run 93 now. But it's worth it! :D

The tune should change itself for the octane level. I have read some posts here with guys asking about the 93 tune or another and the answer was to get the 92/93 becaust the computer would adjust itself for the lesser octane fuel. Not sure if this is true or not.

HVY.....Seems to me the other mods might be causing your

problems.

I have one ordered from TSE-Truckstuff.com for my 04 6.0.

Best price on the net for $329 bucks.

Gonna do the 87 tune mainly because I heavy tow and snowplow.

Plus I am looking for a few more MPG too.....................

It was a toss up between a Diablo $399 or the Hypertech $329

I had a Hypertech 93 tune on my 97 Chevy 350 and that mother

SCREAMED !

I had good luck with it so I will buy another....................

Ahhhhh......for the good old days of $1 buck a gallon premium

........geo :P

I had the HPP3 before and was really disappointed with it. I got rid of the Hypertect tune and went with a Wester's Hot Tune. It's day and night. Do yourself a favor and sell the HPP3 to some unsuspecting soul and do the Wester's thing. You'll respect yourself in the morning.

    • Here's the 2026 order guide - Vehicle Order Guide   RPO code "AS3"?  Not seeing it.  What is it supposed to be?  I see AS3 used a long time ago as some sort of seat option, but its not applicable to the current Suburban.    I see RPO code "AZ3" which is 1st row 40/20/40 split bench.  That is only on LS trim, which LS can't option any of the trick suspension.     2nd row bench power fold RPO code is "ATT".  So your dealer should be able to sort their locator to find matching builds by searching the combo of ATT and Z95 combined to find a 2nd row power fold with MagRide.     You can do the 2nd row power bench AND have MagRide, or Mag with Air on Z71, RST and High Country.     Here's a Z71 with 2nd row power bench and the Z71 Off Road Package which adds the Adaptive Air and MagRide - 2026 Suburban | Details | Vehicle Locator   Here's an RST with 2nd row power bench and the RST Capability Package, and RST Capability adds the Adaptive Air with Magride - 2026 Suburban | Details | Vehicle Locator   I can't find a High Country, but you can do it on there.  Requires the 6.2, and the Sun and Tow pack which allows you to then option the 2nd row power fold.  Black interior only.  High Country comes standard with MagRide and you can order the air if you get the High Country Deluxe, but Deluxe will take you to captain 2nd row.       You can do it at GMC on the AT4 and the regular Denali (not Ultimate) as well.
    • So.  Get this.  On the Chevy regular cab, you can get the factory remote start at the dealer from the accessories catalog.  BUT.  GMC, you can't.   Now...get this...GMC 2 door, you CAN get the power seat.     Go.  Figure.   Anywho.  are you trying to order?  Or locate?  Ordering for 2 door 1/2 tons has been stopped as of April or May?  So you won't be able to order.  You'll have to shop on the ground units or in transit units.     Ordering was stopped because the new trucks are coming.
    • Thank you.  I really appreciate the well wishes.  I'm an engineer in the telecom industry, I know hardly anything about marketing.  Over the years I did some videos for nonprofits and web sites for small businesses and the seed was planted.  Agree with over-buying, I started shooting on an iPhone before I got my first DSLR and tripod.   I'm looking at trucks with potentially 150,000+ miles to keep the cost of entry low while focusing on the client experience and equipment.  Good wireless mics for interviews, the right lenses & lighting to look professional.  But I don't want to be late or break down, the stress of emptying a trailer & securing a rental truck right before a gig would negate any savings from buying a junker.  So anything that leaks water, has extensive rust, or generally unreliable I'd like to avoid.   Does GM/Chevy overbuild these trucks for upfitting?  I talked to a local upfitter, they sometimes tie lights & other 12V into existing circuits, which I always thought was bad.  Which is why I enjoyed the AUX upfit switches on previous trucks (odd they mostly come with off-road or work truck packages).
    • i guess it might be depending on the type of driving. my 2.7 has 120k miles, changed the plugs at 70k and it runs as good as new. i have not used any injector cleaner
    • GM's are stainless and have a fairly robust powder coating, although, still not worth $850 in my opinion. They will hold up a lot better than their cheaper steel aftermarket counterparts.   What I like about the GM step bars is dealers will often equip their dealer stock with them. Lots of margin. Which means a lot of people end up buying them because they're already on the truck, even if they don't like them. So it's pretty easy to find brand new takeoffs with hardware on Marketplace and Craigslist for about $250.   That's what I did for my crew cab. I wanted ZR2 rock rails for the look, but with the ability to bolt up GM's assist step package. From GM it's about a $2500 accessory all in. The old folks in my life can't get in the truck without steps. I found the whole package on marketplace for $180.
