Power Vent Windows

I have a '05 Ext Cab truck, and the back seat windows are the kind that have the manual cams at the back edge of the window that permit them to be flipped outward about 2", probably pretty typical of extended cab trucks.

I know some of the minivans have "power" versions of these flip-out windows. I wonder if anybody has ever thought of, or tried, converting the extended cab truck's back windows to "power" versions.

Could you then get a new power window switch panel for the driver's side front door, do the appropriate wiring for the back window motors, and then somehow flash the PCM so that it would control the back window motors?

Do you really ever open those windows?

We never could get my friends truck to quit leaking air around those windows and he never used them so we urethaned them shut. No more air leaks.

The newer Ford trucks have quarter windows that roll down into the door, that could actually be useful.

I don't think you would have much luck getting the PCM to help you out. You r best option would be servo motors on the hinges. You will have trouble getting them to seal the window well when shut though.

Minimal gain, lots of work.

I could have been a millionaire if I was to develop or even sell my idea to GM, and I think that Honda or maybe Yote has this, but as a teenager, I always wanted the rear window to "roll down" into the back of the cab. THAT would be awesome and the technology was already there, via Suburban/Blazer use.

I was wondering about doing the same thing. I use the windows a lot just to save using the A/C all the time, I need to find one of the minivans to look at, the one I saw was a caravan but I never looked close at how it worked. And if it can seal the big van windows, I don't think it should have a problem with our smaller windows.

Heh, that actually sounds like a pretty cool idea. I rarely use my rear windows, but that's mainly because it's such a pain to open em. If they were powered however I'd probably get some use out of em!

My parents have a Chevy Venture minivan with the power rear windows like you're talking about and from memory, I believe the gap/opening they provide is about the same as when ours are fully openned. So in that respect, I think they'd work. As for control, would you need anything besides the little switch / control panel and the motors? Does it go through the BCM or something that would keep it from being a "simple" plug and play install?

Oh, and I agree with the rear window rolling down idea ... would be kinda like taking the top off an old Blazer ... or taking the back out of an Avalance I suppose (never been in one).

I did it to my '94 ext cab (C/K body style), but I won't be much help on the NBS trucks. For mine I think I used the vent window motors from a dodge caravan. The worst parts were mounting the motors in the cab panel and cutting out the trim panel to fit around the arm mechanism. Sorry -- I don't have any pics !!

This is a little off the topic, but my rear windows on my '99 ecsb used to leak at any speeds over 70mph. I found out by chance if you turn on the recirculate from your A/C, they quiet down immencely.

Just a tip I'd pass on to y'all.

I like to open them on warm days, I usually open them in parking lots because it cools down the truck a lot better than cracking the front windows. My dog likes it too, he goes back there andd sticks his nose out so he can smell stuff. Saves me from having to clean nose prints of the front ones

Was it worth the trouble? Did you use them? Or once installed, and the novelty wore off, were they just ornaments?
