Newbie to Car Audio needs help

I just bought my Avalanche about a week and a half ago.  I'm not looking for that annoying ghetto bass that everyone for miles hears, but I would like to get a little more thump out of my system.  In general the Avalanche stock Delco system is terrible.  What suggestions do you guys/girls have to get my interior enjoyment up to a higher standard.  I don't want to do anything to crazy or expensive just a nice new cd/mp3 deck with a whole new speaker set up that provides a cleaner sound at higher levels with some nice solid bass. I also need it all to fit in the doors or under seats.  I don't want to sacrifice any of my back seat room or the midgate functionality.  I don't know anything about Car Audio other then I don't like what I hear now.

I got Cerwin Vega Vega 6002 speakers from Cruthcfield to replace the stock ones in my Tahoe w/ stock head, they installed easily and sound awesome!  I did not use the recommended bass blockers so I did get more (and cleaner) bass all around but I think a subwoof is still necessary if ya want the really deep, but not necessarily booming, notes (of course my hoe has a subwoof, it sounds good but I may upgrade).  Also, it is easy to add a 12 disc cd changer even if you have the external cassette - I got mine from www.radiosandmore.com ... but yes I am converting a lot of music at home to mp3 so am investigating how to get mp3 playback in the hoe and another vehicle, so far the add-on Neo Car Jukebox looks pretty good as I think a hard-drive based unit is the way to go:

i second the JL subs......hard to beat for the price. i

tried a few and finally settle on 10-W3's. made my own box

to their specs. and saved $$. i needed to save $$, cause

after buying the

Kenwwod eXcelon X915 HU & eXcelon cd changer

Momo componets

Polk 4x6 rears

Alpine mrd-752 5 Channel amp "T-class" (1.100 watts)

cap

enough Dynamatt Extreme (did whole cab in 3 layers)

4awg. power

all 10awg speaker power

i could hardly afford one of their sub boxes.

am i happy with this system after spending $4K?

yes, it feels like i'm in a sound room.....

if you want to see it, let me know, and i'll post a link to

some pics.

I will have more advise at about noon today,... my AV is at the stereo shop getting the upgrade it needs. I had the same intent as you, better clear mid & highs, and hard but not ground shaking bass. The shop is installing JL front component speakers in doors, a 75W x 4 amp under the rear seat, passenger side ( thin enough so seat folds flat) and a 10" JL sub in a custom made box under driver side rear seat ( with plugs for easy removal). Initially they suggested bass blockers on the stock rear speakers, but they did not like the sound with them in, so they removed them. The amp will run the front speakers and sub only. I am keeping the factory head unit for now.

BgBlkAvalanche, sounds like a nice system. Did you remove the rear speakers or did you keep them stock? Also, when you fold the rear seats does the amp and sub still fit? My guess is that the amp does but since you mentioned the sub has plugs you have to remove it to lower the seats. Has anyone tried successfully to add steering wheel controls from the Caddy EXT to the Av? :)

Chevyusa1,

The amp clears the seat when folded down, but the sub has to come out. The rear speakers are running off the factory power with no changes. The shop set up the amp and sub so the bass control is all the way off (counterclockwise) to 1/4 up, and this keeps the rear door from distorting at high volumes. I will get some pics next week and share them with my fello AV owners.

So the speakers are a direct changeout?  Why did you not upgrade the rear speakers?  As soon as you get pics, post em up!

oops.......my mistake, i thought mrowe8 was looking to

upgrade the whole system, HU and all. if you are just

looking to add some more bass, and still use the stock HU,

good luck. the Delco is a fine radio, but lacks RCA's

(although there are adapters to overcome this) which will

deliver better sound quality, and we found this unit to be

so "bassy" that at low volume there was too much bass, and

at high volume, not enough. a lot of guys in my area have

tried this and end up changing out the Delco for an

aftermarket HU. although i have a total of 700 watts going

to the subs, you could go with a lot less and be happy, but

you will not get the full effect out of the Delco.

Like I tell my wife, truck radios only play both kinds of music:  country and western.  (ala Bob's Country Bunker in Kokomo, IN from the Blues Brothers.)
