Air Filter/Intake question

I have annoying low frequency noise coming out of the right hand side of the engine compartment (04 Suburban 5.3L) between 1500 and 2000 rpm (the most at about 1700). The tech (looked like a smart one) said that was typical for these vehicles (let me drive a similar one - same noise), that was caused by the air intake system, and suggested replacing the stock air intake/filter with an "open type" K&N setup. Anybody hed experience doing that? Does the noise go away?

I do not care about "tuning" the truck - I just want the noise to go away.

I also noticed that there are cheap open type air intake setups on ebay. Is any of them worth buying? Any advice/info would be greatly appreciated.

Thank a lot for help.

a cold air intake would put the entrance of the plenum in the front of your truck instead of using the pass fender to channel air in, this would probably help move the sound away from the cab and may cure your problem. other solutions would be to dynamat the hood and firewall, or try and tune it out. wish I could have been of more help.

Thank you for help. Sorry for my ignorance. What is "cold air intake"? Is that open type filter. Like K&N? What is "dynamat"?

Thank you.

A cold air intake is basically tubing that will pull air from outside of your engine bay, this way the engine will receive colder air and make more power. The colder the air, the more dense it becomes so it will pack more fuel and air, creating a bigger explosion in your cylinders, giving you better performance. I really wouldn't consider calling it an "open" type filter, yes it will have a low restriction air filter associated with it, but most of the time the filter will be in a housing to keep the engine heat away from it.

dynamat is a heavy type of material that adheres to basically any surface you can stick it to, it's basically heavy duty sound insulation. It makes the thin sheet metal heavier so it resists vibrating, creating a very quiet interior. Any reputable stereo shop has it and can install it.

You can also click on the gallery and check out some installed pictures to get an idea of what it is.

Thanks a lot, Hotwire

that is pretty much what the tech said ... that those intakes seem to cure the noise (at low rpms under 2000) but they are louder at higher rpms. But since 99% of my driving is at low rpm s .. I do not care.

Thanks a lot again.

BTW .. is there much of a difference between cheap systems sold at e-bay for $30 and K&N systems going for $250 or so?

YES! Watch what you get on ebay, thoroughly read through the feedback the seller has. Most of the time you'll get ripped. The more expensive systems have been dyno tuned, researched, and developed. I know you are not going for max hp, but quality is quality.

I wouldn't go w/ the K&N fipk, they are a little high in price and I don't think deliver as well as others. Also, if they haven't changed the way they do their intakes, it's just an open element w/ a large cut to fit shield in the engine bay, so it wouldn't reduce your noise much at all.

I would go w/ the volant or look at SLP Engineering. www.slponline.com

good luck!

    • Fuel Update   6/7/2026   Since getting Pepper back I've been blending fuel. 50/50 E-85 - 93 pump gas. At my local pricing that is a 97 octane fuel for the price of regular and metering 48% alcohol.    This much gasoline octane locally is $10 a gallon with only one local resource!! I can blend this anywhere I find E-85.     Why? Longer range. Same no KR timing pull. More lubricious fuel. No loss in power cylinder cleanliness and a reasonable chance at seeing any future fuel dilution in the UOA's. When I blend with Shell or XOM premiums there is some friction modifier and antiwear enhancement. No cold weather starting issues either. So lots of pluses and few losses.
    • That's certainly good to hear that there was nothing alarming on the cover magnet volume wise or chunk wise of metal. I don't recall if the Banks cover holds more oil than the factor cover, what volume did you estimate that it took ?. As to the transfer case I assume you bought whatever brand you wanted of a Dexron VI automatic transmission fluid.    Have you changed the automatic trans fluid at some point and actually I don't recall if your truck is the gas or diesel version as that makes the difference as to which transmission and oil type is required in 2023. The problem with my truck is that its the gas engine with the 10 speed and I've not yet attempted to see if I can drop the pan as the silly exhaust is right in the way and I do not want to touch the exhaust system on the manifold end if I can help it, the diesel does not have the Y pipe style exhaust under the pan so is not an issue to remove the pan.
    • I have a 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 with 5.3 litre, with 400,000km. I drove it one morning and when starting later in the day it would crank but not start. I figured it had to be the fuel pump, SO i replaced the low pressure fuel pump in the tank. The problem persisted the exact same way, crank but no start. Checked a couple plugs and was getting spark. I then replaced the high pressure fuel pump under the intake. But the same problem persisted, it tried to start right after the high pressure pump replacement for a few seconds but then just cranks. I plugged in a better scan tool with live data and I can see the low pressure pump has the proper pressure but the high pressure pump is only getting 1-3mpa, when the scan tool says it should be 14mpa. The scan tool says the lower pressure fuel is in the 55-60psi range and it hold this pressure when not cranking. But the scan tool shows the high pressure fuel drop down from 2mpa to 0.   I am not sure where to go from here, any recommendations or experiences with this condition? High pressure fuel rail sensor replacement?
    • Have you had any issues with your 2.7? I’ve only heard of a few with that kind of mileage so far.    OP, I haven’t read anywhere that carbon buildup is an issue. Just make sure to use top tier fuel. They claim that it’s better than non top tier. I’m not sure about that considering my FIL has delivered fuel for years and said it’s all exactly the same.
    • It's raining on and off today, but I was able to change the rear oil and cover before it started. I ended up getting the Amsoil 75W85 for the front, 75W90 for the rear, and the right fluid for the transfer case. I wanted a cover with a drain, so that's pretty much the reason for the aftermarket one. I have a Roadmaster sway bar and had to fabricate 1" spacers for clearance, so that might be helpful if anyone has that on their truck and considering the cover swap. Old oil had 60,000 miles and just the slightest metal fuzz on the magnet; everything looked super nice. Fourth pic is just to highlight the spacers to accommodate the cover. Those bags sure make it easier than the old siphon guns.
