Chevy/GMC outside mirrors

Does anybody know how to get the mirror caps apart? I seen a document which I think was GM that showed how the caps separate from the mirror but now I can't locate it. I want to paint mine but don't want to break anything getting them off so they can be prepped

The best way to do it is to get a very, very small flat head screwdriver and either be careful or wrap the tip in a paper towl and pry the mirror caps off. They are snapped in, not glued nor do they use any adhesive.

My chrome mirror caps had a couple squares of adhesive. . . Find as wide and thin a screw driver as you can to pry them apart. The wider the screwdriver, the more contact it'll have and the less chance of it distorting the plastic. I sanded mine down and painted with a dull black spray paint. Holds up good, other than a few chips from road debris/bugs.

There's no way to replace JUST the mirror itself is there?? I cracked mine today and I don't want to pay for the whole mirror assembly if I don't have to.

Do you have any ideas of how much it might cost? eBay has the entire mirror assembly for about $40.00. . .

Does anybody know how to get the mirror out? On my other car, the mirror just popped off, it was held in by 4 plastic ball-snap things. Is it the same with ours?

No idea, I'm guessing around $30, but you might ask GMPD. I think the part #'s may have been posted at one time.

The mirror is held on with a bunch of plastic snaps arranged in a circle that snap onto a large ring that's attached to the motors. I think you can get the glass out if you grab the edge of it and pull out. Since yours is broken already, you don't have to worry about cracking the glass. I once had to try pulling a heated signal mirror glass out of a beat up housing without hurting it. I succeeded, but it wasn't fun.
