1500HD questions?

is the frame 1500 or 2500? what springs are on them? I searched for a brake kit upgrade but can't seem to find them , anyone know of them? does the 20" rim issue apply to the HD's. why are the cabs different then the other crew cabs? you would think that the dealerships would have better info on the trucks they sell, but they all seem to have different answers. :D thanks

I'll answer what I can.....

The frame is based on the 2500 "LIGHT-DUTY" trucks, yours is part #15148487 (The part number for the 2500HD's is 15148518 for auto.trans. & 15090840 for manual trans.)

Your springs are the same as the 2500HD's,part #15081294 (5-Leaf)

NO,The 20" wheel bulletin does not apply to the 1500HD,2500LD's or 2500HD's.

On the brakes, your truck takes the same frt.pad kit (part#88964201) as the HD's,but it takes a different frt.brake rotor than the HD's.(part#18060215 for 1500HD & 2500LD and part#18060654 for 2500HD's)

Same with the rear, same pads, different rotors. This might be why its so hard finding a brake upgrade kit.

As far as the cabs themselves (The sheetmetal that is) there the same,no matter if its a 1500,1500HD,2500LD,2500HD or 3500.

Hope this helps a little!!

1500HD and 2500 are identical trucks 'cept for the nameplate.....

Only difference is years, ie in '02 they called it a 2500, in '03 a 1500HD.

Obviously NOT same as 2500HD, just the base 2500

So, smartguy by that theory my '01 was a 3500? :D I think I'll defer to MS3 on this one, but generally a 1500 HD is IIRC a 2500 sprung like a 1500 with all the towing hardware( trans cooler larger rad, oil cooler and such) my 1500HD is alot more truck than a base 1500

Yes,You're right,The 1500HD and 2500 (crew-cab,short-bed) are identical (As far as engine,trans,axles,8600lb.GVWR,etc.)

GM just couldn't decide what to call it! A 1500HD or 2500 :D

And yes,Your right also...kinda,The 1500HD has nothing to do with towing hardware, the "Z82" Trailering pkg. was still an option,it wasn't standard on the 1500HD,but the 1500HD is alot more truck than the standard 1500 and I think I know what you mean when you say towing hardware, you mean that its more "heavy duty" for towing which it is.

It did come with a standard engine oil cooler and larger radiator, along with the 6.0 V8,H.D. Auto.trans.,8-lug wheels, larger axles and springs and an 8600lb.GVWR.

Excuse my bias but I'm on my second 1500HD 4x4 and believe it to be a homerun design for GM

That's just my opinion

plenty of room

tows like a mean beeeotch and the westers tune just made it better

Ric,I agree with you,The 1500HD is a great truck and I would have bought one if they were available in an Ext.Cab,It would be the perfect truck for what I need,I don't need a crew-cab or a 2500HD.

Nope,Not available anymore,GM stopped building the "LD" 2500's (8600lb.GVWR)in Dec.'03.

The only thing you can get now with that GVWR is the 1500HD Crew-Cab

Thanks for all the info and work you put into my question. If anyone hears of a upgrade for the brakes let me know. If anyone is looking for a sub box, made by subbox rocks, single 10", behind the rear drivers seat let me know, i'm selling mine.

Thanks again
