99 Tahoe, old body style.....

A few months ago, my flasher started clicking once in awhile even though I didn't have the turn signal/hazard lites on. In the beginning, it would only go on for a few seconds and even then only once every few weeks. The frequency has gradually increased to the point it happens almost half the time I drive the truck now and it's starting to drive me batty

This morning, I was playing with it a bit and noticed the noise would go away if I depressed and held down the hazzard button...... dang, I don't wanna have to go in there and change that sucker if I don't have to. Has anybody else had this problem?

Secondly, my stereo is cutting out intermittently, sometimes for an hour at a time. Then it'll come back on again for no apparent reason (rough road or smooth). I think it's a speaker problem because the functions on the head unit appear to work normally. Is there a main relay in front of all the speakers, and if so where is it located? The stereo is a stocko Delco unit with the separate CD player underneath, and the CD player is affected by this problem as well when it occurs.

Thanks all,

Cabo

Cant speak for the hazard light gremlin, but the radio sounds like it's overheating. A lot of the factory units have fans in them to help cool things down. If that fan died, the unit could be overheating and shutting down the amplifier to save itself. There's no relay or anything like that from the back of the head unit to each of the speakers - that's direct wiring through the harnesses. The only common components are inside the head unit itself, and that would most likely be the amp as mentioned.

Thanks for the info kdm  .......looks like I may be needing a new head unit then. :)

Anybody on the hazard flasher problem?

After a drive for an hour or so in the hot weather (with your radio playing at a decent volume level) stop your truck and turn the volume all of the way down. If you stick your head close enough to the radio, you can actually hear it running. When I owned my 99 I heard it a number of times. With my 03 I have yet to hear it, of course, the head unit is completely different. It is actually kind of a good engineering idea (minus all of the other shortcomings). You never know, they may have "value engineered" it out for 03.

I can hear my fan WITH the radio on low volume and YES it gets hot. I have a similar problem with mine. Every so often, the rear speakers will die. Confirmed it is the head unit. Sent it out once to have it repaired and they gave me the old "no problem found" because they did not get it up to temp. I just live with it now as the few times it happens, if I turn up the volume loud, the rears will kick back in. There are a few internet businesses that will swap your head unit with a refirb unit for a fee.
