Saw something cool on a .....

I don't know where to put this, but since the Titan is a light duty I figured here was as good as any other.

Well I noticed on the back of a Titan on the pumpkin of their lame Dana 44 that there were heat sinks all on the back of it. Does it get hot enough back there where a heat sink would make a difference? If so how come they were the first to come up with this??

I can't imagine that amount of heat being generated unless you were towing something BIG.

I used to see those on hot rods. I suspect it just looks better than the stock iron pumpkin.

Google it.

Second website on Google list

The Dana 44 is too small of an axle for a vehicle the size of a Titan, the Dana 44 belongs on a Jeep. More than a few people had problems with their Titan's eating the gears, seemed to me that a lot of people saved themselves by changing the gear oil and putting in more than it came with from the factory. I'm sure you can find one to fit your GM truck.

I saw a Titan on the news today with a chain-link fence wrapped around the front of it and a cop car jammed into the rear end. That was after it busted two other fences and ran down the taxi-way at the Phoenix airport weaving in between the airplanes. Stolen, of course.

Sorry, that didn't have anything to do with the original post. I've seen Titans, too, with the heat sinks on the diff. Not sure why.

Someone posted a link to that chase over in the "off-topic" section.

Those pilots must have been wondering what the heck was going on :chevy:

I didn't see the picture you are talking about but from your description.. it sounds like something like this.. http://www.tdperformance.com/pdf%20pages/c...Diffcovers.html (at the bottom of the pdf) there are many more out there... just the first one i found. As for the actual need or benefit from it.. I really dont know, my dad had a guy bring in a truck that caught on fire from the differential oil boiling out of the differential and spewing out the breather on to the exhaust.. it caught fire. But to boil 90w, its pretty hot, needless to say the differential was going bad inturn causing the heat.

I'm a Nissan Tech, Someone googled it and nailed it! They were eating gears, however the heat synchs (spelling?), different fluid, and different maintenance schedules were all combined to fix it... buuuut... we are not seeing any problems with them from the factory with the old fluid and no maintenance and towing a lot, so I think it is a Dana mistake and hs since been taken care of.. as well as the new brake fix being out. I like the Titan, but would not give up my chevy for it.. ever! I like my 5.3 Horsepower!

all those things may have stopped the problem for now, but it pretty much put a band-aid on the problem. They'll go bad later if they had problems with them new. Ill have to tell my buddy to watch out for his, he bought his about 10months ago. Nice trucks, Im not crazy bout the DOHC engine... timeing chains stretch and need replacing ALOT more often than the conventional engine design. Other than that they are nice truck but agreed... cant beat the bowtie.

I have had my Dana rear axle in my Jeep Grand Cheroke rebuilt 3 times (2x's under warr. & the last by me $$$$$)

I only have 93,000 miles on the JGC 2 years ago I said enough is enough, I bought my Yukon to do the towing of my trailer. Dang JGC is still whines more than my wife and she drives the JGC.

The Dana 44 is too light for heavy duty work, More than one poster on a few RV forums have had problems with them. Although the rear axle in the 1500 series (mfg by american axle) in the GM products also have a bad rep. for premature failure.

But they do look cool from the ass end!

Maybe on of these would work for your GM truck?

Cooling Differential Covers

They are no where as extreme as the Titan ones, but I like them. Easy to service, and no freaking goop to reseal them. I think Nissan also added them due to the tiny rear end being used to tow the 9000 lbs the trucks rated for.

I saw a Titan the other day on the highway with a finned cover. The thing that struck me was how small the rear end appeared. Almost as if they had used a Frontier axle.
