1/2 Ton Tranny Cooler

Spent about 4 hours today installing the Transmission Cooler (12497071) sold by GM Service Parts Operations. It is under the Accessories zone. The beautiful thing about it is that it is A:) Genuine GM product (keeps warranty happy, covered by 3/36 warranty) B:) Includes new hoses to run to the transmission and radiator, this eliminates splicing, hose clamps, etc. (leak prevention). C:) Has original equipment look/durability.

The downside to this installation is that it is a real biznatch to get the old radiator to transmission return hose out of the chassis. These pieces of rigid tubing bend all around everything. However, once you get it out the installation of the new return line isn't all that difficult.

I would recommend this installation to anyone who wishes to install a tranny cooler on their 1/2 ton truck. 12497071 includes everything that you will need, even directions!

To get the snap rings on the transmission and radiator quick connect fittings off I found it very handy to use a very small flathead screwdriver. (I used the wee small Craftsman that comes with that little pocket clip on it). You just slip the blade of the screw driver under the snap ring and pop it off. I went to the local dealer and purchased new snap rings for the installation. (Just because thats what the shop manual advised). You could save yourself 5 bucks (EACH!! for a little piece of metal crap!) and reuse the old ones with no problem whatsoever. If anyone needs any tips on this just drop me an email.
