Level out ride..

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

what i want to do is drop the back end to where it is level with the front right now. My friend had it done on his truck but i cant get ahold of him to see what parts or kit was needed. I know someone here has to know of a good kit to buy to get this done.

I've got a 2001 Silverado LS Reg Cab. if that is needed...

Thanks in advance!!

Also, does anyone have this done with pictures??

You can buy drop shackles at AutoZone or Oreally's for about $30-$40. That's all you need to drop the rear. Takes about 30 minutes if you've never done it before and are using hand tools. 10 minutes with air tools and experience.

Oh hell yeah. That is awesome. Is there any need for alignment or anything else with the install??

Also, what is a good amount. It looks like 2" seems to be the shortest drop. Hopefully that will make it look good. is that going to be enough to make a difference?

If you can wait a bit (I'm at work right now, so I can't get to the pictures until the morning), I can give you a pic of an '02 reg cab with a 2" drop. It's about perfect. I can also show you what an '05 reg cab looks like with the same deal.

No need for a new alignment either.

I pulled the 2 inch blocks between the axle and the springs on mine. They did the same thing to my neighbors SS at the dealership. Shackles will work great too, although it looks like you'll have to remove your trailor hitch package (if you have one) to get at the bolts.

Here a before and after of mine.

Good luck!

Did you have to buy new u-bolts when you pulled the blocks or just re-use the factory ones?

I had to get new ones. The factory ones didn't have enough thread!!!

I might have gone with the shackles, but the height of my neighbors SS was perfect with the 2 inch blocks removed so I figured I'd just do the same.

Good luck!

Cool - Your truck looks good with that stance. I want to get the back end on mine down as well. Yours a 2X or 4X? Also what size wheels are you running in those pics - 20"? Where did you get the new u-bolts?

I picked the new U-bolts up at Pep Boys auto parts. I think the kit was about 23 bucks. I had to shorten mine up a little with the hacksaw. I know my neighbors SS has GM U-bolts that are the correct length.

The Wheels are 20" Boss with Eagle GTII Tires. The 20's and GTII's are pretty common out here. My Neighbors SS also has 20" with GTII's. It's one of the reasons I went with this size.

The dealership tol me I could also crank up my torsion bars on the front to raise the front to match the back, but I didn't think it would look right. BTW, he also told me that removing the blocks would not effect the warrenty.

Oh ya, my truck is a 4x4.

Good luck, and thanks for the kind words.

Shims may or may not be needed on extended cabs and crew cabs. I dropped my '99 nbs extended cab and didn't need them. When I dropped my '05 crew 2wd, I did. Bell-tech will tell you on most applications, you won't but on some, you will. Just drop it with shackles and if you have a slight vibration, you'll need the shims. They aren't needed on regular cabs.

    • New to diesel trucks. I happened to find my oil cooler leaking oil externally with only 4,000 miles on the truck. I didn’t realize this was an issue until I started researching it. Dealer is going to replace it under warranty but I’m wondering if there’s anything GM is working on to fix this issue. I’ve heard the oil filter used is the same as they use on their V6 motors and that’s what is causing the problems. Should I switch to a bigger filter or keep using the OEM recommended?
    • So, GMCustomerService:  Judging by the Update History pictured above, is this truck missing any updates that it actually needs. If it's just for the infotainment system, the radio is working fine and no trouble with SeriusXM. and Android Auto is working fine wirelessly with my phone. Some months ago, an update notice was sent to my truck. I approved the update and it finished saying that the update was successful, but it seems that whatever that update was, it didn't actually get installed - at least not if I'm to go by the Update History shown above.   So, again, are there any updates that this truck really should have? I've checked with my dealer but they're reluctant or commit to anything and if I want them to check, they require a $200.00 fee just to check it out and then I'd have to pay for the actual update(s).    Ignorance is bliss, and if none of the updates goes to fixing any mechanical discrepancies, I'll just leave things as is.
    • Hey everyone, I recently had an issue with my 07 2500HD GMT900. My DRL’s stay on at all times. Right front turn and right mirror turn signal indicator stay on solid at all times. By “at all times” I mean the only way to make them go off is disconnecting the battery. I tore the headlight assemblies out, tried disconnecting the harnesses to eliminate bad wiring at the harness, I unplugged the headlight switch, no change and the mirror turn signal still stayed on. My first thoughts were : Bad bulb and/or socket somewhere, under hood fuse panel bad, bcm bad, tail light or trailer wiring problem, or some random short to power in the harness.  Possibly a bad ground but unlikely. I had a big clue in the fuse panel, it had a burnt smell. I started pulling every fuse that had to do with DRL or right turn/park lamp. Nothing made the right directional turn off but pulling the DRL2 fuse made the DRL’s go out.  After studying wiring diagrams, I found that both problems had that fuse panel in common, the bcm also controls both problems but knowing the fuse panel had a burnt smell I removed and disassembled the fuse panel and found a little corrosion on the printed circuit board.  I ordered a new fuse panel from Amazon for like $260. When it arrived I installed it, and put everything back together, the problem was fixed. I figured the fuse panel needed to be replaced anyway so that was a logical place to start. Hopefully this story helps someone in the future. Regretfully I didn’t scan for codes before I did everything.
    • That stinks. I’m sitting on the side of the road right now with the same issue. Never had an issue before taking it in for the ground strap recall. Now I’m outside of warranty and they’ll probably want $200 just to diagnose what they already “fixed”.
