question about new rims and 285's

Here is what I have: 04 Z71 ecsb 1/2 ton

I would like to get some new wheels and tires in the very near future and I have looked and looked and cannot find anywhere that it says explicitly what backspacing I need to stay within the non rub region for 285's. I have been told that it is somewhere around 4.5".

Now with that said, I would like for my tires to stick just a tad bit more than stock because I have fender flares and I would like the tires to match up to the flares a bit better.

If anyone has any suggestions or opinions I would greatly appreciate it. I am definately getting 16x8 wheels and BFG AT's assuming they are fairly quiet for an AT tire.

Right now I have found a 16x8 wheel with 4.25 BS and -5mm offset. Will these work and not rub with a lil tb crank?

Sorry for the book and thanks in advance.

I wish I could tell you what my offset is.

But if it sets the tires out any further than factory, and you're running 285s, you might have to trim the airdam just a tad.

Click the link for the '02 in my sig, you'll see that they stick out a bit further than stock, and I had to trim my airdam to get the 285/75/r16 Nittos on there. The 285s did NOT rub anything at all when on the stock rims.

I believe the factory backspacing is 5" with a +offset, not sure the exact number. With that new rim, your rims be sticking out about 1.25" from now, tires, about another 1.5". So you'll probably be gaining about 2.5" (give or take a 1/4"). I wouldn't be surprised if you have to trim a little off the lower airdam like Wingnut mentioned. If you do crank your t-bars up, which I would not do unless you have to, get a re-alignment. Chris

I wish I could tell you what my backspacing is, but I have 16x8 AR rims with 285's and NO problems with rubbing, especially on the front. I am closer on the rear of the inner fender than the front. Look on the AR website, they have a chart that tells you what the backspacing and offset is for the rims that are model specific.

Also, I highly recommend the BFG AT tires. I have 30k on mine right now and there is at least 50% tread remaining. They are quiet, provide excellent traction, ride and drive and are wearing very evenly. I rotate about every 6-9k miles.

The 16 X 7 OEM wheels have a +31mm offset or ~5" backspacing. The 17 X 7.5s also have a +31mm offset giving them ~5.25" backspacing.

I have the BFG's on my landcruiser in a 285/75/16 on a set of stock 16 X 8's. They are great tires and even less noisy then the Goodyear RT/S street tires that were on it for awhile. Low wearing tires but expensive. Decent street tires although they do pick up rocks and fling them but most good AT tires do.

Oopps, I did the backspacing calculation based on a .25" rim lip. I measured both wheels last night and it's more like .50" or just a hair more. So 5.5" backspacing on the 17's and 5.25" for the 16's on the NBS wheels.

I have a 2005 1500 4x4 which came with the 17 inch factory steel wheels. THey are 7.5" wide and had a 29 mm offset. I also went with a 285/75R16 tire (Nitto Terra Grapplers (awesome tires BTW)). I too wanted the tires to set out a little ore than factory. I ended up with a set of Eagle Alloys 102 (go to www.aewheel.com to see). 16"X8" wheels with 3 5/8" BSM and -20mm offset. Perfect fit. I have some pictures at home and I will try to post them tonight so you can see if that is the look you are after. BTW I do not have wheel flares, so keep that in mind. I'm looking for a great used set of white wheel flares because I think that will finish the look I am after. To make this combination work, you will ahve to crank up your torsion bars, slighlty trim the lower front airdam, and use a few cable ties to pull the inner fenders back a little.

FYI, I threw some 16 X 8's with a 265 on them and a 4.5" backspacing 0mm offset on my truck last night. It sticks out almost two inches further. I measured side to side and it cuts down the clearance inside the fenderwells ~3/8" from the stock 7" wheels and same size tires in the front wheel wells on my Z71 NBS.

    • Brought my 2015 Colorado into the dealership to check my touch screen issues, had that ghost touch thing happening. They said I needed a new touch screen and they could either order me one for $500. The lady at the service deck was nice enough to tell me I could order a touch screen online for less, she did stipulate that the touch screen had to be factory OEM, you can't pair an aftermarket screen to my radio seeing it was 2015, it had to be a GM factory OEM only. I found a few on Amazon and Ebay by the numbers on the back of the old screen, DJ080PA-01A GM# 22740886, Some said "OEM" in the description and others just said "Replacement". Would a replacement be the same as a OEM as long as it had the same numbers on the back of the screen? In some of the descriptions they also show different brand names but same numbers, is that an issue?
    • I have both but typically use the 4 legged walker (wheels on front, ski's on back).   The four wheeler is starting to be used on "longer" outdoor walks.  The 4 legged walker is particularly helpful in practicing good walking posture.  Both of my knees are at different stages of recovery and I'm trying to not develop poor habits.  I can actually manage with a cane but it's very difficult not to favor one leg over the other.  My PT recommends I continue with my 4 legged walker for a while.  Yesterday was four weeks since my last knee replacement and I'm excited about my progress to date.  It has been a hell of a rough journey so far but it is exciting to witness  systematic and continuous improvement.  I went for years watching the decline of my "mobility".  It seems that everyday now I am alerting my wife to something I can do now that I couldn't a day or two ago!  I encourage anyone facing the prospect of knee replacement to share any concerns with others who have had the surgery.  It isn't an instant fix but rather is a considerable amount of short term pain for long term gain.  Recovery time and pain levels vary for individuals post surgery but the end results are typically very positive and I've never encountered anyone regretting having had the surgery.
    • The lifter issue can be dealt with by shorter oil changes and quality oil IMO.
    • Got heavy rain, hail and light rain yesterday.
    • I'm putting in an A-pillar pod/gauges, and I'm asking if anybody can identify a (preferably) fuse for a switched power and illumination circuit on the driver's side interior fuse panel. Offhand, everything I checked with a test light was constant-hot, and I'd much rather uses a piggyback fuse. I can certainly find a wire, but I'd rather not half-tap.   Thanks in advance for any help.
