I can't belive someone hasn't put this up here yet.

 

The buzz is all over the net.

 

The 2006.5 DuraMax will have 360 HP, and 650 lb/ft of torque. This isn't a rumor. Click above to see the GM press release :jester:

 

I hope that finally the media will give Chevy their due, and quit fawning all over that 6.0, that furd has out. :chevy:

Those were some massives numbers i read the article. And the Dmax coupled with the allison man what a team. How much do yall believe that engine could pull?wow 650 ft lbs of torque. :jester::chevy:

I think it's very smart on GM's part to put this new engine in the last year model of the current line of HD's (instead of updating the LLY for '06 emissions). Work out any bugs, if any happen, and then release a 400hp version with 700ft/lbs. of torque with the new HD's in '07 MY. Might not happen that soon, but we'll be seeing numbers like these soon. I know I'm getting one, can't wait :chevy: ! Chris

Yes, thats all well and good (and a lot of fun to drive), but is the GVWR/GCWR being raised as well? If not, essentially they are producing a truck that has more engine/transmission than the chassis can handle. And we all know that there will be some idiots out there that decide "oh my truck can pull 30,000lbs fine.

 

I'm not trying to bash, and I'm certainly not against having 650 ft lbs of torque :chevy:, But I see a lot of focus on the engine/tranny, and not seeing a lot of changes to the rest of the truck, axles/transfer case, brakes, etc It's just making me wonder

Are they going to derate 1st and 6th gear like the LLY's? Because essentially the LLY puts out the same numbers as the LB7 in those two gears. It is 2nd, 3rd, and 4th that see the HP and TQ increase. That is just bogus to me, because most of the time you want more power in the lowest and highest gears. I was just talking with a guy yesterday on the job. He has an 05 DMax/Alli. I asked him how he liked it, and of course, he said he loved it. This was his fourth, the first an 01, then an 03, then an 04. His first comment was, "the 04's and 05's are supposed to have more power. If they do it is not noticeable". He said out of all four, the 03 felt like it had the most "umph". I have heard this comment from many LLY owners who previously owned LB7's. They just cannot feel the power increase. GM needs to step up the plate and put the numbers out in all gears, especially the top and bottom end IMO.

That may be the reason that they switched to the 6 speed. Hopefully so

I agree. I'm sure they raised the numbers a little. They need to get closer to 26K GCWR if not higher. These motors and trannies can handle it, but not sure about the rest of the truck in the long run. What is the point in having all that power in a 7000 lb diesel, just to drag race it. Ya that's fun, but it needs to make use of the low end grunt the diesel has, and put it to the trailer hitch without stressing the truck.

From what I've read, Allison/GM didn't change any of the gearing in the tranny, just added a 6th gear. The gearing is the same as always, but don't know about whether they kept the power down in 1st like before. I doubt the towing capacity will raise much, if at all, the frame and everything else would be the limiting factor as mentioned before. It's not all about the engine/tranny when it comes to towing. One thing that may lead to higher towing #'s would be the exhaust braking, just cuz it could tow 20K lbs, it HAS to stop 20K lbs. I still think the big jump will be when the 900's roll out. Chris

Thanks for posting. Sounds like this is for 2006 right off the bat rather than late release in 2006.5. This also means that the current LLY engine only had a "lifespan" of about 1 1/2 years. Raises a few questions about parts and service down the road.. Nice to see they are putting some effort into diesels and trannies. I agree with other post about us seeing 400hp/700tq pretty soon too. So the new DMAX (DMAX Gen 3) is probably only here to stay for a similarily short amount of time.

One other observation. I noticed they mentioned lowering the compression ratio, and using more fuel. This gives me the impression that there might be a significant drop in fuel economy (much like the difference between the 7.3 powerstroke and the newer 6.0 powerstroke). It seems like the pushers for diesel have switched from economy to a performance mode to compete in "power wars"

 

On a slightly random side note, I'm conisdering trying to find myself a manual transmission regular cab 1500 with the silverado package (preferably high miles but with a good body/interior). I want to swap in an I-4 cummins with a 6 speed. Strictly for fuel economy reasons. It might be a fun little truck to use for errands. I'm still debating on the year range. Its a toss up between a 96-98, or maybe an early 70s model (with the bull nose hood)

The reason for the lower compression ratio is for the extra HP level. To make more HP obviously more fuel is needed. So more air must also be blown into the cylinder by the turbo.

 

To allow for a larger PSI output from the turbo, the compression ratio must be dropped to avoid over pressureizing the cylinder at top dead center.

 

Any time a larger turbo is added to a turbocharged diesel, for more air, the compression ratio should be dropped in the name of reliability.

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
