Gas Fumes

Has anybody else experienced a blast of gasoline fumes upon startup in through the vents. The fumes are noticed mostly at startup, away from any gas station, and not related to a gas fill-up.

I also noticed a gas smell towards the right side of the engine but I don't see a gas leak anywhere.

This just started within the last few days on my wife's 2002 Trailblazer.

Lean down and look at the gas tank where the filler tube meets the tank. See a lot of them cracked and leaking there. You'll see a stain running down the tank from that joint. I believe there's even a "special policy" on this problem on 2002 Trailblazers. We've replaced several dozen gas tanks on the TB for this issue.

If you grab the hose and tug on it (GENTLY!), it may even separate from the tank. Obviously, you don't want to do this unless you're prepared to get it fixed.

When replacing fuel tanks on the '02 TB, do the owners get the larger 22 gallon tank, or just the OEM 18 gallon tank that was replaced with the 22 gal in 2003 model year?

As a follow-up, the source of the gas leak was a bad fuel pressure regulator. Dealer replaced this and all is good.

Glad you got it fixed. Where is the fuel pressure regulator located? Was this covered by a warranty?

Although the truck is almost 2,000 miles over the warranty and 5 months out past the given 36 months, the service manager at our dealership had it covered under the factory warranty. We've been really happy with our dealership given their excellent service and this is just one example of that.

As far as the location, I'm sure somebody has the details, but I'm sure its near the fuel rail near the top of the engine. I attached a link below that may be more specific. My mechanical skills are limited with the newer engines - my knowledge is still based on working on a 1973 Chevelle Malibu I bought in high school back in the 70's. A lot of good memories in that car - I think the backseat was wore out before the driver's seat.

My mechanical skills are limited with the newer engines - my knowledge is still based on working on a 1973 Chevelle Malibu I bought in high school back in the 70's. A lot of good memories in that car - I think the backseat was wore out before the driver's seat.
