Hello new here. I just bought a 2000 chevy silverdao 1500 4x2 today. It is a reg. cab and short box. Under the hood the sticker says it is a 6.0L. What can i check to see if it acually is a 6.0L and not a 5.3L. Sometimes those stickers can be wrong.

Thanks

Check your mpg. If it's 12, it's a 6.0. If it's 16, it's a 5.3. :sigh:

There should be a way to check the VIN number. Usually one of the letters/digits in the VIN is reserved for the engine designation. Search.... well, I guess SEARCH IS BUSTED... Go to google and search for VIN GM ENGINE 2000, or something like that.

Or if you know anything about the trans, a 4L60E is mated to the 5.3; a 6.0 requires the 4L80E.

What are the chances?? Another current thread just happened to include a post about a 2001 6.0 1500. There's a picture of the engine, not the best for determining if you have a 6.0, but it might help.

As far as I know 1500's have never come with a 6.0, however the engine code in your VIN is the 8th character, and it will be a letter. If it is a 6.0 it will have the letter N(LQ9) or U(LQ4), if it is a 5.3 it will have the letter T(LM7) or Z(L59). I only found those two listings for the 2000 model year, check your VIN or you can check the RPO list in your glovebox. The list in the glovebox will have the letter number code which I put in brackets after the VIN letter code. :sigh: .

Thanks alot. Yea the VIN has a T on it, so must be a 5.3 then. To dark to see inside the the glove box right now. So would that be the 5.3 H.O. or just the 5.3?

It is definately not the 5300 HO since it is a 2000. Depending on build date, you either have:

1. 270 HP and 315 lbft Torque

or

2. 285 HP and 325 lbft Torque

The year 2000 had the half year swap in of the Vortec 6000's Cam Shaft.
