COMPONENT: Parking Brake

 

POTENTIAL NUMBER OF UNITS AFFECTED: 142585

 

SUMMARY:

On certain pickup trucks equipped with manual transmissions and built with either PBR parking brake systems or TRW parking brake systems, the parking brake friction linings may wear to an extent where the parking brake can become ineffective in immobilizing a parked vehicle.

 

CONSEQUENCE:

If the parking brake does not hold, unintended vehicle movement could occur, which could result in a crash.

 

REMEDY:

Dealers will install a low-force spring clip retainer for vehicles equipped with a PBR parking brake system. On vehicles equipped with the TRW parking brake system, dealers will install a redesigned parking brake cable assembly. The manufacturer has not yet provided an owner notification schedule for this campaign. Owners should contact Chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438 OR GMC at 1-866-996-9463.

Thanks for news on the parking brake but I have a question about it. The recall says for Chevrolet and GMC's with a manual transmission. Why would the parking brake be different on a manual transmission then on an automatic transmission?

I don't know, but mine is crap. And $80 for parking brake pads is retarded.

I did it a little over a year ago, and there is not one scratch or nick yet. I just used regular Krylon brand interior/exterior spray paint, I can't remember if it was flat or semi-gloss. I sanded the entire rim down, applied a clear adhesion promoter/primer, painted, then did one coat of clear wheel coating. I'm surprised it has held up as good as it has. . .I'm a little nervous about getting any tire work done - I'm afraid any balancing or tire changing will shred the crap out of it.

The recall is only on manuals because the NHTSA is forcing GM to do the recall, and the arguement is automatics have park to hold them in place as well. Everyone has heard of a manual rolling even in gear, and without a parking brake it is easy for it to happen. They have had enough incidents of trucks with manuals rolling out of parking spots to warrant this recall. Where as automatics in park will not roll even if the parking brake is a POS. I got the recall on my truck just before I sold it. Atleast that is the way it was explained to me.

What sucks is, I don't know about the rest of you guys, but here in Texas, you have to have a functioning parking brake to pass inspection, regardless if it is a manual or an automatic. I replaced the e-brakes on my old 2000 Silverado and my 2001 Tahoe already...both after failing state inspection. GM has a bigger problem on their hands than just the manuals but they won't admit to it and fix the problem. Of course I guess that is partially why they went back to the dumb drum rear brakes as well!
