Speaker problem

Hey y'all. I have this weird ticking/clicking noise coming from the right side extended cab door panel. The ticking is off and on and usually happens when I'm driving on rough road or hit a bump or something. I thought it was coming from the door panel so I replaced some of the clips and made sure it was on there good and tight but the sound persists. The last few days or so there's been a coresponding change in radio sound with the ticking noise. It sounds like the speaker in that door is coming on and cutting out with the ticking sound. Could the speaker wire be shorting somewhere? It does it sometimes even with the radio off but I know that doesn't always mean it's not associated with the radio. Any clues? It's been bugging the crap out of me for some time.

Sometimes a speaker on death's door will sound like that too.

It could also be a rip in the cone. If it's still under warranty, take it in.

Wow, that was close!

If you had said you had a Nextel phone, I wasn't going to offer any advice. I ***hate*** those be-beep noises that they make. What gives those people the right to invade everybody else's quiet space with repeated be-beeps?

Anyway, since you're with Cingular, it's ok. No beeps.

If you hear a noise in the speaker, and the noise happens even sometimes when the radio is off, it's probably some other wire shorting into the speaker wire, with 12 volts probably, and you're hearing the speaker go from 0 volts to 12 volts over and over. There's probably a pinched harness somewhere along the the wire raceway along the bottom of the driver side door. Ever take that moulding off? If it's not all gunked up with mud and dirt, it just snaps out of its groove.

Anybody who installs a subwoofer has had those off, because beneath those is where you run the power and signal wires for the subwoofer, and also beneath there is the factory wiring to the rear of the cab. I'd snap those off and look inside, and also I'd look for other "installations" that might have pinched the rear speaker wires.

Thanks guys. It looks like I'll be tracing me some wires this weekend. I hope it's an easy fix. Last thing I want to do is waste a day taking it in to the dealer. (I'd rather waste it at home)

You nailed it my friend. The wire harness that runs to the back of the cab somehow (probably when I installed my trailer brake controller) moved to the outside of the kick panel in front of the driver's door. Well, every time I released the parking brake the p-brake pedal pinched that harness and eventually wore through. So, I patched the wires, stuffed the harness back behind the trim panel and voila! No more clicking noise. Thanks mmmikkke for the insight!
