Who do You Believe

Hi People , I was wondering if any one had an idea who I should listen to ? The veh is an 1993 Olds Cutt. Supreme 3.1 , I really do not use it much but with the price of Gas I am using it more , so I figure I should change plugs ang wires . The Plugs are Ac Delco R44LTSM , now the Dilema my Owners manual say's gap them at .45 and AC say's gap at .60 ?? Who do I believe and what would be the difference if I did the wrong Gap distance ? Thanks for any help

The larger (.060) gap would be capable of igniting a leaner mixture, but it also requires a higher voltage to bridge the gap, and so it would require that your wires, and other high voltage components, are in top condition. The .045 gap would spark at a lower voltage (75% of the voltage required for the .060 gap).

Gaps tend to increase as the electrode wears, so I expect that when you remove your old plugs, you'll find that their gap is even bigger than .060.

I'd try the .045, since the owner's manual is more specific to your car. If it fires smoothly under all conditions, I'd consider the experiment a success.

Neither .045 or .060 is going to harm your engine, even if the engine expects the other gap than the one you eventually chose.

If I remember right I think the larger the spark the better ignition you get. I would try the larger gap first and run it for awhile and then pull the plug to make sure your not damaging anything. But I think the larger the spark the more efficient your engine runs.
