Has anyone hung a plow

Recommended Posts

I know it isn't recommended, but my buddy is going to try to hang a plow on a '00 Silverado.  I don't think I've ever seen one on a new body style 1/2 ton truck.  I have seen alot of them on previous body style 1/2 tons though...

I was just wondering if anyone has seen or tried to do something like this?

My buddy was desperate to find a new plow truck this fall, and didn't really want to spend the money on a 2500HD.  His cousin has his dealer liscense and they went to a couple of dealer auctions.  He bought a '00 Silverado excab (4-door) shortbed 4x4 LS package and several additional options and 60K on the odometer.  I think he said he gave $15K for the truck and he says there isn't a mark on it (not even in the bed).  That sounds like a good deal to me especially since the miles have to be highway miles...

I'll post a pic, if he decides to keep it and hang a plow on it...

Shaners this may or not be true but a local dealer goes through a company called monroe.  They add stuff (customize) trucks here.  This dealer told me they can add a plow to an ext cab Z71 only.  ALot of their trucks were customized this way.  Im guessing as long as hes not doing alot of plowing and just here and there it would be ok.

3/4 torsion bars may be something to think about.  The front will be weighed down more and this will help

I've got the part numbers for the different torsion bars at home, I got them from superlift.  I'll post them on here if you need them.

Any idea on the cost of the 3/4 ton torsion bars?  He bought a 3 yr 45K warranty from his cousin for $550.00 covering all drivetrain and electronics etc...

It'll be plow season here way too soon, and I want to make sure he has all his bases covered.

Alright, I didn't forget about you.  I'm not going to list them all since I'll probably do that on my site by the end of today or tomorrow.  But they are 100.37 each on GMpartsdirect.com  So for the pair w/ shipping you'd be looking at 243.55  The torque rate ranges go from 4863 to 9054

The one for 7367 which is bar code WZ has the following part numbers:

LH  15712411

RH  15712412

If you want any different weight rating just ask, the reason that I went w/ this one is because that's what superlift put in there truck when they ran the 35's.

Ok Fellas,

Heres the scoop on plowing with new GM trucks.

If its not under warranty don"t worry Gm no care.

GM will not warranty ANY plow related failures

on ANY  Gm truck unless has option VYU snow

plow prep pkg.

Gm DOES NOT offer snow plow prep pkg on any

full size 1/2 ton ex cab.

Only 1/2 ton reg. cab or most 3/4 ton trucks.

also 3/4 burbs, tahoe,avalanche.

Also plow dealers will not install plows on certain

trucks because they will exceed front axle weight

ratings.  But yet again if u buy and install youself

they don't care anyway.

Use caution some dealers might  warranty plow

related breakage w/o plow prep option.  All you

can do is ask.......Just don't get suprised !!!!!

Not to step on toes or be a know it all.  But I have

been there and had many trucks with plows and

had to go to 3/4 ton this time because of this.

Check out www.plowsite.com

Then u can be a plowhead...LOL...................Geo

Alright, just got the part numbers up on my site.  Go to www.mudcrazy.com and it's on the GM Part Numbers section.  There are 9 Different Torque ratings available.  So, I don't know what one you should use.  I know when I lift I'm going w/ the WZ bar

BTW:  One of the homeboys here in

hannibal has a 99 1/2 ex cab with a

fisher m/m and has had no problems.

It has 40k miles and out of warranty.

No issues with cranking up torsion

bars either for clearance issues.

Also another has a new s-10 with a

western.  It ain't broke yet so he don't

care.  Dealer told him in advance about

no warranty for plow related breakage !

BTW:  Had my new western plow put on

yesterday....Talked to the dealer at length

about these issues..........geo

I was wondering how you plow with a pickup truck.  In Mississippi the farmers use tractors for that.

Then I realized yall are plowing snow off of your streets.

                           STOOOOOOPID me!

Well, I guess I'll just go catch me a few speckled trout this weekend.  If it snows on Capn Dean's boat......we will have bigger problems than where to hang a snow plow!

BTW:  I did go to Detroit MI once in the winter.  The Flight Attendant I was dating told me to bring my heaviest jacket because it was cold.  Boy did they laugh at me.  My windbreaker just didn't cut the mustard.....

tacomas, s-10, rangers ,nissans etc..

Seen lots of homemade jobs too here

in snow country !!!!!!!!!!!!

BTW: I see you want to be a plowhead !

The strangest thing I ever saw with a plow on the front of it was a mid 80's Subaru wagon...  4WD with high/low range and about a 5 foot plow...

I used to have one of those wagons too...  it would go just about anywhere, but it was grossly underpowered... (meaning if you wanted to pass someone, you'd better write them a letter and tell them you're coming around...  LOL)

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
