DETROIT (Reuters) - General Motors Corp. is recalling 804,000 full-size pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles because of potential brake problems, federal safety regulators said Tuesday.

 

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said unwanted application of the antilock brake system in some vehicles can cause increased stopping distances during low-speed braking and may result in a crash.

 

Vehicles affected by the recall include the Chevrolet Avalanche and Silverado pickups and the Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe SUVs. The GMC Sierra pickup and Yukon and Yukon XL SUVs are also affected. All 804,000 vehicles trucks are from the 1999-2002 model years, NHTSA said.

Too slow

Yeah I saw that. I still remember the first few times the abs kicked on as I was nearing a stop due to a slight bump in the road. That'll wake you up in a hurry when the truck doesn't slow down like it had started to.

I'm just trying to figure out a way to get new parking brake shoes of this deal. Mine are shot, and it's hard to justify $70-$80 for parking brake shoes when you live in such a flat state.

That price dosen't seem so high when the gas pump stops at $50.00 and my tank ain't even filled up.

i assume it is only the rust belt states that are going to get a recall cause its 'only' 800k trucks

If that's true, then it's really a shame. I have the problem and live in South Carolina. However, I have driven considerable miles in the "rust belt states" during the winter months. I hope that NHTSA rethinks the recall and includes all vehicles with this problem. If I was just going to stay in my 'hood with the vehicle, I would have bought a moped.

This "cold states only" recall is a bunch of crap. I live in Alabama and have had this problem too. My vehicle has never been exposed to salt or any acidic rust causing chemicals. Earlier this year I went to turn onto a small side road (probably doing 10 MPH) and the ABS kicked in. Luckily I was able to just steer it back straight and go down and turn around. It was almost like I hit gravel or something the way that the ABS kicked in. I thought what the *ell was that. I stopped at the intersection where it occured and there were no gravels or such to have caused this. There have been other instances where it felt sorta funny trying to stop on ocassion but nothing like the one day.

I called chevy about this issue and they were no help. It is not an "offical" recall as far as they are concerened. Well I guess I will have to wait untill winter when I need my truck for plowing to get it fixed.
