Got an email with an offer of a 60 month/100K warranty.

I second that.  Take it now before they change their minds.

Someone posted something like that on the putc forum.  Got offered the extended warranty then they reversed the offer!  :0

If the knocking problem was going to cause engine failure it will probibly happen befor the 100K mark.

Thats my exact thoughts on this issue.  I'm also thinking that its not gonna hurt GM in the least to offer a 100k warrenty on the motor cause they know knocking isn't going to dramatically shorten engine life.

They might end up having to replace a sensor or two, but I doubt they would offer this if they thought the engine was gonna bit the dust before 100k...

Yep, agree w/ posts here, Ryan - you did right thing for now, especially if it's relatively mild and only on cold start (sorry can't remember your exact symptoms).

If it is piston slap in this instance, excessive enough to be a problem, will likely show up before 100K miles.  If it is not, then you just got more coverage for other potential issues.

Guys and Gals:

I sure hope you've checked out your State's Lemon Law before accepting anything from GM. I had a 98 Dodge Ram that had the engine knock (This problem, if you don't know, if common in the ford, Chevy and Dodge Trucks). Dodge told me the same thing they are telling you. Also took Dodge to arbitration twice (2nd time the arbitrators told Dodge to give me a 5 year/50,000 warranty). At 41,000 miles and over 3 years from date of purchase, I said screw that and got a lemon law lawyer.

Dodge bought the Ram back at the orginial purchase price.  Dodge paid the lawyer's fee of $2,000.

I dislike Lawyers, but sometimes they are worth it.

If you live in Calif, below is the link to the lawyer I used:

why do i wanna use the lemon law?  I dont want my truck bought back its a great truck.

I thought my Ram was a great truck too, except for the knocking problem. Now I tend to buy my vehicles to last for years. Now after the extended warranty expires and I still have that problem, how am I going to feel?

I, along with others, beleive that vehicle makers should stand behind their vehicles. If they can't fix the problem, then don't keep giving me a different excuse about what the problem is. If they can't fix it, they should be required to stand behind their product and buy the vehicle back. If they aren't willing to stand behind their vehicle and buy it back, then you need to lemon law to give the vehicle maker a push to buy back their POS.

I, of course, am hoping that my 01 Silverado does not have the knocking problem that has been mentioned. If it does, then I'm not going to put up with GM's crap. I will contact the lemon Law Lawyer I used with that Ram I had.

Of course, JMHO

With their 100K 5 yr offer they gave me it made me feel like they stand behind their products.  I am fully satisfied.

Well if you're happy.

I normally drive 12,000 miles a year. That would put me at 60,000 at 5 years. I tend to drive my vehicles 10 years + before getting rid of it. I couldn't be happy with what you got. I assume that you drive 20,000 a year. That 5 year part is not normally added to the orginial warranty.

I wish the best for you.

My truck is almost 2 yrs old and i only have 23,800 miles

Comes out to be about 12K a yr.

Roger:

Was your Chrysler buyback the result of engine ping like mine?  Or did you have a knock?  I thought you had ping like me?  I dunno...this knock thing is different than the ping.

As I understand it is MUCH different!  If it was simply cold start up knock & GM says don't sweat it...then I wouldn't.  If it is a continuous "bang bang bang" knock {Anybody who has ever heard an internal combustion engine run out of oil knows this sound well} Then I would pursue it!  Regardless of what GM said.

I am not naive enough to think that manufacturers don't deny the existence of serious problems (Like Dodge did).  But on the other hand, not every problem is a serious one.  I could not STAND the incessant valve rattle...it crawled your skin when the truck got up to hwy speed.  THAT was enough for me.  If it only did it cold, or say when you punched it with a belly full of el-cheapo gas...then I coulda lived with it.
