Brake noise was the rotors, new undiagnosed noise

Finally got it in for the "rubbing" sound on the rear driver side brake. Over the last couple of days I've heard kinda like a squeak everytime I hit the brakes.

The advisor told me that the rotors had some pitting and rust, found that with the new trucks if they turn them a little it usually gets rid of the noise. I left and the first light I have to stop at here's the eeeeh eeeeh eeeeh sound. I turned around, went back, told the advisor to get and drive next to the building to bounce the sound back. He did, he heard it and drove to the mechanic, took him for a ride. He sprayed something in the brake, still did it. Mechanic went for a ride, checked E cable. They were stumped. The service manager volunteered to sit on the tailgate and listen, he said it's coming from the rear and is suspension related. We then drove it with the service manager standing on the nerf bar, he said still in the rear. They think it's related to the back end of the truck raising when you come to a stop, so that's why they suspect suspension, but I also had a lot of noise when it was in park and they kept pushing it forward, which they said u-joint.

They want me to drop it off for the day, and they will give me a free loaner.

These guys spent 45 mins. driving my truck and hitting the brakes, they were sincere in trying to figure out what it is.

I think I have finally found the right dealership, I will give them credit for what they did even though I have to take it back.

Any ideas what it could be?

how new is the truck? mine doesn't make any weird noises like that but if it was u joint related it would make it at numerous speeds, and especially under acceleration, it sounds like an inconsistency in the brake rotor or maybe the brake pad, or does your truck have the new rear drum brakes?

Hey there Lisa,

They found pitting and rust on the 'rear' rotor???? As far as I know (and it is not much) the 2005's have drums on the rear. I say that because on one of my vibration trips they told me they turned the rear rotors. I stated I thought it was drums on the back. Repy was, 'Nooo they are rotors'. So I asked for them to show them to me...... They were drums. Idiots....

Have to say it must be nice to have a dealership that works with ya.

(PS) Seems everyone I was dealing with concerning my truck has fallin off the face of the earth. I can not get ahold of anyone. So I document every attempt and message left.

Budone - So they said. The service advisor said they have seen a lot of 05's with a build up of rust, he thinks because there is more metal in the pads. I thought I had drums too, but I didn't say anything because I wasn't sure and didn't want to look stupid.

What ever this noise is it's getting worse. It's happening at slower speeds without as much brake pressure. It's only when I hit the brakes............it's almost like a loud creaking............creak, creak, creak, creeeeeaaak. It was quite a bit louder today.

Danny it only happens when your braking, not taking off or steady driving. I thought I had drums.................so what the heck did they turn?

99silveradoz...........glad to see they didn't ship you down to the Gulf Coast. We sent two of our guys down last Sunday, they were finally sent to Mississippi today, we're still waiting to hear what their assignment is. They were upset that they have been in "class" and just hanging around waiting for FEMA to tell them what they were going to do.

On the way to work I got hit with a rock, now have 2 small cracks to get repaired tomorrow. I went a whole 2 months without a chip.......

I have an appt. Thursday to take it in, let's hope they figure it out.

Have a great night!

Drums can be resurfaced (turned) also. Take a look through your rims. If they're drum brakes you can easily tell by the lack of anything resembling brake pads or a caliper sitting on the metal behind the wheel (think of a brake caliper on a bicycle wheel) - i.e., there should only be a large circular metal drum behind the wheel. Looking at Chevy's website, it looks like the 1500HD/2500HD/3500 all come with rear discs, but the 1500 only comes with rear drums.

I wonder if they're just not too concerned with the exact details while speaking to you...

Whatever it is it's getting worse by the minute.

Went to fix the windshield and the noise is louder, and I seriously think it's the brakes only because I'm feeling clunks and clicks in the brake pedal now, kinda the feeling when anti-lock kicks in.

I stopped to show my daughter the cute little Cobalt with the supercharger on it, ended up taking it for a ride. It's a 5 speed and let's just say I had a blast driving it. Cute car, told the saleman to give me a price and to drive mine and see how he likes the brakes. He said he thinks it's the brakes too, thought maybe the turned the shoes? Colbalt would be $567 per month, only would get $16,000 for mine.........I laughed..........told him the Ford dealer offered $18,500 for a trade-in on a Mustang.

He told me to call my advisor and tell him I can't wait until Thursday to fix the truck, told me to come in Monday after work.

Thanks for the info dgood, I'll check it out right now............I do believe they are drum.

Talk with you later.

Drum on the rear, disk on the front.

Does the truck track straight while you're driving forward - if you take your hands off the steering wheel while on a level road? Does it feel like there's a brake grabbing and pulling the truck to the side?

From your other post - shoes are the pads that get pushed into the drum - only the drum gets turned. Are you feeling the 'clunks & clicks' on the pedal *every time* you brake?

The clunks and clicks aren't there everytime. I will take her for a spin later today and let you know if she is driving straight.

I still think whatever the rubbing or hanging up sound was is the culprit. It's just gotten way worse. I'll let you know what I find later, have to go cut the grass now and get some things done before I take her for a ride.

Thanks for you help dgood

You're welcome. I just redid the brakes on my 2002 1500 all the way 'round, at 34k miles. I know some people got GM to pitch in on the cost of their brakes, but I didn't think it was even worth the time & aggravation; it sounded like it was going to be cheaper to just do it myself anyway and use the parts I wanted (incidentally the Wagner ThermoQuiet ceramic pads are working nicely, stops on a dime and silent). The front driver's side caliper was hung up on the bottom pin and the right rear caliper was frozen (common, it seems).

Keep us posted on the dealership's work. Once they put it on the hoist I can't believe it would take them long to figure out. It certainly sounds like a drum or shoe surfacing problem.

She will be going in first thing Tuesday morning. I called them today and they didn't have a loaner for me so I have to wait until tomorrow.

I really never had chance to go down a smooth road, the one's I did go go down she has a pull to the right, the noise is so loud it almost sounds like it is both rear, but since I'm driving it I hear it out of the back driver's side.

Keep your fingers crossed they get this thing fixed...........I'm tired of dealerships.....I think I'm at 15 or 16 trips for this truck and I haven't had it a year yet.(Nov. 1)

Let you know what happens tomorrow....

Lisa,

I had some very similar noises coming from my breaks on my 2004 rcsb. The first problem was a really bad creak when I hit the breaks. It took me a while to figure it out but it ended up being the teather strap right next to the passenger side rear cab mount. Basically its a small steal cable with metal ends. Its mounted with shoulder bolts throught the metal ends. Anyway, when I would break, the cab would move slightly causing the straps to rub and make the creak. The solution was I machined 0.020" off of the shoulder bolt diameter and made my own teflon bushing. Problem solved. For you, I would have the mechanics look at it and maybe remove the strap to see if thats the problem (i would replace it, dont drive without it, I'm really not sure why its there)

The second problem was the brakes would chirp when I was driving slowly and while my foot was not on the brake pedel. Light brake pressure would make the sound stop. The problem was that the brake pads were moving around the their mounting points (which is normal) and there is a lot of metal to metal contact. This contact caused the noise. When the brakes are applied the play in the pads disappears. The solution was to apply some high temperature brake caliper grease to the back of the pads and to every metal to metal contact point. Problem solved. The grease is special for brake applications so it does not melt with high temperatures.

I hope this helps you.

Hey Jeff, that's an interesting item with the strap. It is making the creak sound and only when I stop. I swear I have felt it in the brake pedal though, did you? I noticed too that the more you drive the truck, the more you hear it and the louder it gets. Did it sound like the creaking was coming from the rear of the truck or could you tell it was up by the cab?

Mcreyaufmiller I hope they check all the braking mechanisms, this noise is horrible. Your thought is much appreciated especially when I don't know a lot about brakes.

It is pulling to the left when I let the steering wheel go.

I dropped it off this morning, I told them I really felt it was the brakes. They called at 4:30 and said they were going to keep it over night, they were waiting to get their new "chassis ears" I asked what the heck those were and she said it was something they use to pinpoint the noise on the suspension. I really hope these guys don't start guessing games. They gave me a Malibu for a loaner, feels like my butt is on the ground when I'm driving it...........yuck!

I need my truck back tomorrow because I'm moving my Mom on Thursday to another apartment.

Gonna be a long day guys, I think this truck has been in more than the last one.

Have a good night! :chevy:
