Well, just got a 2002 Silverado 2500HD 4x4 8.1L Allison as some of you may have read in the O/T forum, now for the questions.

 

Plan on doing alot of maintenance since it is close to the 30,000 mile mark and not really knowing what maintenance has been done before. If anyone could help me out with these questions, that would be great.

 

1) How many quarts of transmission fluid does it take for the Allison if you pull the drain plug and change the spin on filter???

 

2) How many quarts of the blue stuff does the NP1 transfer case hold???

 

3) How many quarts of gear oil do the front and rear differentials hold???

 

4) How many grease zerk thingys are on the truck???

 

5) Does everyone use the oil filter they suggest, I think they make a longer one, are there any clearance issues with a longer one, if you use a longer one, what number do you use and how many quarts of oil does that add???

 

Is there anything else I have left out? I have already changed the air filter, going to change the gas filter, I am thinking thats about it. Anything special to check on the 8.1L or the Allison?

 

I know I could probably search for some of this stuff but thought I'd ask anyway with all my questions in one group!

Have you considered the fact that he just bought a used truck, and might not have gotten the manual with it?

 

I assume most people don't come here just to read my bad jokes, horrible puns, and worthless comments. I'm not quite narcissistic enough to think that...They come here to ask questions, and get answers other than "RTFM".

 

Sorry SilveradoWV, I don't have an owners manual for the HD to get your answers...I just typed all this to get you a free bump. :chevy:

The manual looks just like the one I had with my 1500...plus it never has the answers I'm really looking for, if it is even in there its always total transmission capacity or whatever and stuff like that. I really doubt #4 and #5 are in there, and I'd be surprised if the other questions I listed are actually in there also... BUT I'd love for someone to prove me wrong, either way I'd get the answers I'm looking for, so whatever it takes.... :chevrolet::rolleyes:

By no means was I trying to be sarcastic, there was no mention of SilveradoWV not having his owners' manual. Sometimes people are so lazy that don't want to do any research before asking questions. I was just prodding him in the direction of where to find the answers.

 

If you took my reply as sarcasm, it was not inteded to be that way. :nono:

Apparently no one does their own maintenance anymore.... :chevrolet:

 

If anyone was wondering about the answer to Question #1, the answer is approximately 6.5 quarts!

Here's a shot..

 

2) Did mine and it used 2 quarts.

 

3)IIRC, front is 3qts, rear is almost 4..Mobil 1 in front, and GM "grapejuice" in rear.

 

4) 11 zerks...some are a real bit!ch to get to.

 

5) Stick with factory oil and air filters.

 

I may be a little over in the fluid amounts, but more is better than less.

 

Hope it's a good start....

      You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.

      Diesel hit $6.00 here today at the truck stop.   Payed $2.79 for E85 today too.

      2026 6.6 L5P oil cooler leaking oil at 4,000 miles

      New to diesel trucks. I happened to find my oil cooler leaking oil externally with only 4,000 miles on the truck. I didn’t realize this was an issue until I started researching it. Dealer is going to replace it under warranty but I’m wondering if there’s anything GM is working on to fix this issue. I’ve heard the oil filter used is the same as they use on their V6 motors and that’s what is causing the problems. Should I switch to a bigger filter or keep using the OEM recommended?

      Seems to be Missing a lot of Updates

      So, GMCustomerService:  Judging by the Update History pictured above, is this truck missing any updates that it actually needs. If it's just for the infotainment system, the radio is working fine and no trouble with SeriusXM. and Android Auto is working fine wirelessly with my phone. Some months ago, an update notice was sent to my truck. I approved the update and it finished saying that the update was successful, but it seems that whatever that update was, it didn't actually get installed - at least not if I'm to go by the Update History shown above.   So, again, are there any updates that this truck really should have? I've checked with my dealer but they're reluctant or commit to anything and if I want them to check, they require a $200.00 fee just to check it out and then I'd have to pay for the actual update(s).    Ignorance is bliss, and if none of the updates goes to fixing any mechanical discrepancies, I'll just leave things as is.
