"Service 4wd" message

Looking for some guidance here. I have 48K miles on my truck. Yesterday upon starting, the dash display read "Service 4WD" and none of the indicator lights on the selector panel (2wd, 4Hi, 4lo, 4Auto) were on and I could not switch anything. I checked the fuses and they were OK. I drove around in 2wd and the truck felt fine. After a two minute trip I restarted it and there was no message and no further problems. All is functioning well. Everything was normal this morning as well. I have rarely used 4wd in the past six months.

I read about some issues with the selector switches on the forum, but I haven't seen anything about the error message. I have an extended warranty and would like to know if this is even worth taking in to the dealer. Anyone have similar experiences? Could this mean there us something physically wrong with the 4WD unit itself or is this a remider to get service from the dealer?

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like your 4wd switch is faulty. I'd take it in and have them replace the switch. Failed solder joints on the connector in the switch are likely the culprit. The problem comes from the swtich losing power thus triggering the Service 4WD light. I just repaired the switch not too long ago--the same issue. Very common problem. :D

Mine did the same thing. Went away after shutting the vehicle off. Took it in for some other work and told dealer. They hooked up the computer and cleared the codes. They said there was nothing wrong just needed to reset the system.

That is all I know.
