Infinitely Variable transmission

What does an IVT transmission sound like in a V8 truck pulling a trailer? It must make some wicked noise.How about modified exhaust systems? Ripping off 0-50 times must be wild.No shifting just WAAAAArrrrrrrrr yyyoooowww.....

Not gonna happen in trucks.  Can't handle the torque of a big V8.  In passenger cars....  sure.  Audi already has a CVT in the new A4.  Honda's had one in their electric vehicles for a while (not in US).  Ford's going to have on in an upcoming car (2004).

Want the ultimate in ultimate?  They won't let ME design trucks for em.  But in the early 70's I saw a hybrid car.  The technology was here then...just no market.  Fellow used an old Opel (fake corvette lookin car) and put a DC motor in it for the drive, hooked up a pile of batteries to it, and stuck a Briggs & Stratton 8 Hp engine in it to be the generator.

SO here we go:

Take a 3/4 ton GMC.  Drop a front wheel drive CVT (actually an electric motor just like a dang freight train).  Full Time Front wheel drive via an electric motor with infinite variability.

Then drop in another similar sized electric motor for the PART time rear wheel drive.  (Okay, so I have a backwards 4X4)

Add rear wheel steer.

Next leg:  Drop an Isuzu 4 cylinder diesel engine and a 34 gallon tank.  Attach that to a 12-15KW generator.  {I am not the electrical engineer but I am sure 12KW would be enough to move this vehicle in 2wd without battery assistance}

Then...add your high tech battery banks:

SO here ya go.  You have a 4wd truck that can drive itself up to about 40-50 mph for about an hour tops on Batteries alone.

Fire up the Genset and we can go 80 MPH for about 8 hours.

A small 12KW genset will burn about 1/2 - 1 gallon of disel an hour depending on the load.  Geez look at the efficiency?

Neat option?  Got 120/220V ac available from your truck on the jobsite.  Need quiet at the house?  PLUG IT IN to the house current and shut down the genset!

They could put a hydrostatic transmission in trucks (they can handle the torque from diesels in tanks, I'm pretty sure they could handle a V8...)  I think it would wind up driving the costs waaaay to high, but it would definately be cool to drive.
