New PR for Big Block MPG!

Recommended Posts

Packed up the 04 CC/Big Block/Allison/4x4 and headed west to hunt waterfowl. Took the back roads instead of the highway and averaged 14.7 MPG. Nice work for the Big Block.

On the way home I had a wonderful 30+ MPH wind at my back. Noticed that my DIC was showing 19-20 instant MPG, so I stopped and filled her up. Drove my normal 62-63 MPH for the trip home with wind at my back most of the drive.

Got in to town and filled her up...averaged 56 MPH during the drive and got a whopping 17.8 MPG! Wind aided, of course, but still impressive numbers for a crew cab truck loaded with hunter, dog, tons of gear. Makes me really believe that aerodynamics are very important to MPG.

Speed definelty affects your MPG's in a bad way... There was a thread about this in the LD section of this forum, and may people did the real life test.

I notice 2-3 MPG diference with my Dmax, if I keep the speeds at or below 65 MPH.

Yup, I've done the real life test. I went from under 15 mpg (more like under 14), to over 21 mpg by keeping the cruise set at 65mph or under.

That said...17.8 mpg is just amazing for a big block. That's awesome Daubs.

Daubs,

That's great!

But how was the hunting?

Hunting sucked. Every fall I gather with college buddies to hunt waterfowl on public marshes and the Platte River. We have to schedule months in advance to make work with vacations, families, etc.

In year's past we have shot 50-60 ducks...last year it was really warm and the migration just wasn't happening. We shot 6. This year much of the same...we shot 4. But we did get some good pheasant hunting in.

And really it's all about gathering and seeing old friends, telling stories and tossing back a few.

We will probably pick two dates next year and make final decision based on weather and migration. Great fun no matter how many fowl hit the ground.

I too have noticed speed affects milage. Keeping the cruise on the 8.1 at 69-70 I get about 14.5 with it set at 75 I get 13. It's only a mile and a half better but I guess it depends on what kind of mood I am in.

1.5 miles is 1.5 miles further down the road (on the same gallon of gas). Thats almost 12% better mpg. You'd be hard pressed to see that type of gain with any expensive mods or add ons.
