Storing Tires

Recommended Posts

I may buy some tires b/c of a deal I can't pass up, but I won't be needing them for 2 years or so. I was wondering the best way to store them (unmounted). Should they be on their sides on top of each other, or standing side by side? Thanks

Also, is there anything that I should do to prevent dry rot?

I have stored tires for years by putting them on their sides and stacking them. My brother puts his inside garbage bags and seals them up.

I didn't do that but I do make sure I keep them where sunlight doesn't shine on them through the windows.

Hope this helps.

I used to work at a tire shop, distributer a while back(which must make me an expert!) They would stack them all sideways and out of ANY sun. I would think a big chain like them would know something. I still store my stockers the same way. However, I'd still keep an eye on them for dry-rotting. Hope I helped.

I took my 20's off last week and cleaned up the rims, front and back and then put a good coat of the silicone tire wet(nasty stuff) and lobbed it on the outside of the tires to prevent dry rotting. I layed them on a drop cloth and stacked them sideways under a bench, away from light. I also let out about 5 psi to keep the rubber from cracking if/when it expands/contracts. Then I covered them with another cloth. They should be fine until spring.
