Difference between Z71 and "4x4" ??

Well first of all, let me say hi. Name's Tim.

I am really interested in getting a truck. What I want is an ext. cab, short bed chevy with about 50k or less.

Cruised by the local dealer today just to take a look. And they had a 98 Z71, leather interior, auto, 5.7 with 84k for $20 grand. Then they had a '97, NON-Z71 but 4X4, cloth interior, bench, 5 speed, and 5.0 with only 44k also for $20 grand.

So....what exactly is the difference in the two? What does the Z71 option entail?

Also, the 2nd truck had a 5.0 in it. What are the spec differences between it and the 350 ?

I think the only difference is the shocks, skid plates and stickers..

Z71's are usually more equipt. (no 5-speed) The new ones have push button 4wd.

I you find a 4x4, just change the stickers.. :0

Welcome to the forum. Chane is right about the Z71 option package. the Z71 has offroad jounce bumpers too. I can't remember if there is maybe one more thing in there with it, but I'm sure a Z71 guy will let us know.

I think those prices are pretty high though... For $20K you should be able to get a "new body style" (1999 and up) 4x4 truck LS package.

I got a 99 new body style 5.3L Z71 w/43k miles on an ebay auction for $16,100 from a guy in Dallas. Excellent condition and needed nothing. Those prices you mention are outrageous. IMHO, I couldn't imagine buying a truck from a "stealer". You're automatically paying a $3,000 - $5,000 premium.

For what it's worth, the truck I had was a 93 Z71 w/103k miles in excellent condition. I paid $12,100 for it from a private individual four years ago to the month. Sold it yesterday for $9,200 and it was a pretty good deal for the buyer. Great condition. If you do the numbers that truck cost me $725/year for 4 years or use!

Moral of the story...shop around and look at ebay and you can buy one right!!! LET THE DEALER STEAL SOMEONE ELSES HARD EARNED DOLLARS. Save your money to build what you buy!

Welcome to the board. Chane and Shaners are right about the differences of a Z71 and 4x4. The 88-99 K1500 Z71 package has all the things that Chane and Shaners said. I think the '96-'99 models also had a high capacity air cleaner also. The prices do seem a bit high for the 2 mentioned. The Vortec 5.7 was rated at 250 hp, 335 ft-lb and the 5.0 was rated at 220 hp, 285 ft-lb. Good luck in finding one like you want.

Thanks guys. And dont worry, I do not plan on buying from the dealer, just wanted to take a look since I was nextdoor getting gas.

I plan on about $15k and I figure I should be able to get a clean truck with 50k or less miles.

Hmm... sounds like the Z71 package isnt really a big deal if I plan on lifting it a little anyway eh?

If you would prefer the 350 over the new body style 325 c.i.(5.3L) then you'll have to look at the '98 and older trucks.

Personally I can't imagine why you wouldn't want a newr body style truck... but that is your preference and you need to be happy with what you drive.

Its not really that I prefer the 350 to the new body styling...

I actually dont really have a preference for either new or old.

But it is more as to what I can afford. I want to spend 15 grand and get the most truck for the money. And I prefer low miles so an older, yet lower miles, truck is going to be my best bet.

Hey, if you can find me a new style ext. cab, 4X4, with under 50k on it for $15,000 or less.....I'd be happy to get a newer style.

A big rubber (maybe some other material) cushion/bumper looking thing that helps soften the "hit" if you bottom out the suspension. Someone had a picture of one here before, but I don't remember who. If I find it, I'll post it for you.
