ABS Problem??? 03 silverado

Today is the 1st time I've had my abs kick in, I felt the pedal pulsate but sounded like some kind of grinding noise. I figure this isn't normal. Anyone had anything similar or ideas what this is?

Sounds normal to me. The first time my ABS kicked in I thought something was wrong as well, but that is just how it sounds.

That is normal. Where have you been? You live in PA and there is snow there. You should always test a new (to you ) vehicle in a empty parking lot wet & snow and get used to the ABS and all other systems. Locking Diff,traction control & active handling before venturing out on the road in bad conditions. If you had done so the ABS (and any othere) system would be familliar to you. :-0

Yep, abs will give you a grinding and if it's quiet, a mechanical sound from the pump running. You'll also get feedback in the pedal as the system pulsates the brakes to avoid lockup.

Yeah, that's normal. I've noticed my headlights and dash lights will dim slightly when I get the ABS kick on. I don't think my ABS grinds, but it does pulsate and catch you off guard the first time.

Everyone should follow Redvett's suggestion on knowing your vehicle's reactions. That's what I was doing and glad my surprise was on a back road with no one around and plenty of flat off road area in case of excess sliding. I was checking my brakes before going down a steep, bumpy, snowy covered, icy back road when the abs kicked in. This was the 1st time my abs had kicked on. I knew the pedal would pulsate but didn't expect the rather loud grinding like sound. I first thought the drivers side front brake had metal to metal, that's close to what it seemed and sounded like. Took me by surprise but worked good. Mainly concerned about the what I considered LOUD sound. Didn't seem right. Thanks for all the info guys.
