I'm not sure exactly what you want to know "scary".  A friend of mine has a late 90's 2-door Tahoe with the LT package (leather etc).  It has the vortec 350 cu in it.

I did some extensive searching on this not too long ago as I was going to buy one.  But I ended up with my 2000 Silverado Z71 and I haven't been sorry.  IMO the new body style trucks and Tahoes/Suburbans are 10 times the truck of old.  I'm glad I went with the Silverado over an older body style Tahoe.

The 2-door version was made from at least 90 through 94 as a Blazer.  Then in 95 they changed the name to Tahoe.  The last year that they made the 2-door Tahoe was in 1999 right before the new body style.  You can't get a 2-door in the new body style unless you go to Mexico but then I don't think you can get one because of international something or other.

As far as engines go, the 1996 came with either the 5.7L 350 V-8 or a 6.5L Turbo Diesel.  Available in either 2 or 4 wheel drive and all with automatic transmissions (a manual was available in 94).  And this combo continued through 1999 when they discontinued making them.

Hopefully this helps.  If I'm wrong, somebody feel free to correct me.  This is just what I had found out through my research mostly on the internet and used car lots.

I wasn't really looking for a 2 door model when I went looking for a truck, but have always wanted one. Does that make sense? Well anyway, my '99 Sport has the 350 v8, 255 hp 325 ft lb tq. electronic 4spd auto trans. The years after 1996 got the horsepower boost from 200 to 255? Not sure is the hp rating was 200 or not...

As far as models go, there is the sport which has black wheel flares, bumpers, grill and mirrors. Mine came with the Z71 package, 265/75/16 tires, trans cooler, skid plates, and tow package.

The other 2 models are LS & LT. The LT is a basic cloth interior and sortof a boring exterior. The LS is leather and upgraded interior/exterior paint.

Hope this helps. The 2 doors are classics and are all made in Mexico. The last production year in the US was 1999...peas.

My friend that bought the 8.1L 2500 Avalanche had a '96 Yukon 6.5L diesel that he sold outright before buying the Av.  The truck had high miles on it, but was clean.  He got $8-10K out of it.

My other friend just turned in his '99 Tahoe "sport" on a new HD excab.

Both vehicles were 2-door models.

The two-door tahoe/yukons are really nice.  I know a couple of people who have them.  I was looking at those some before I bought my truck.  Just could find any around here really, and the couple I did find weren't worth buying.  But everyone I know with them really like them a ton.  The 96+ had the new vortec engines.  If you find a nice one for a good price go for it.  I'd still like to have one of these days.

The 1989 - 1995 TBI 5.7L engines (LO5) make 206HP at 4000 rpm and torque is 294 at 2800.

The 1996 - 2001 Vortec 5.7 (L31) makes 245hp at 4600 rpm and torque is 328 at 2800.

For more power, the 96-up is the way to go. Mostly all of them will have a 4 speed auto transmission with overdrive. The 2 doors are definately harder to find, but I personally like them better because its lighter with a shorter wheelbase so easier to park, plus look sportier. It will feel like more power if you get one with a 3.73 rear axle ratio instead of the 3.42. GU6 is the code on the option sticker in the glove box for the 3.42 and GT4 is the 3.73. I love this truck and it is perfect for towing the jetski, or whatever else I need to. Generally, the GMC Yukons come more "loaded" than the Tahoes, which had more option packages and you may find some which are base models. The Yukon comes in SLE and SLT configurations. SLE has cloth or velour-like interior and may or may not have a cd player. The SLT is top of the line with leather, cd and consoles etc. Mines an SLT 4 wheel drive with the nice gearing and Z71 option, which I'm not sure they all came with..and it's not for sale.. :D  but, a good place too comparison shop for prices and see what's out there is autotrader.com and do a search. Thats where I found mine and it was just sitting there on the lot 10 miles from my house waiting for me to come and get it.

By the way, I think it was 93 and older which had a little bit older style look grille and/or front end to it, so if you get a yukon in a 94 thru 99 it will look like mine, just the engines are different 96-on up, as they went to the vortech. Interior is identical 94-99 as well, I believe, with the exception of 95 was the last year for driver-only airbag, and 96-up has 2 of them so the dash is flatter on the passenger side to make room for it. I think they are a perfect all around- all purpose vehicle. Mine rides like a cadillac for a truck and handles equally well. Its a firm, but not harsh ride like some trucks because it has more weight on the rear, being an SUV as opposed to a pickup. I am the second owner of this one and it was babied and garaged all it's life and in near showroom condition. After it lived 90,000 miles of rust free Florida driving, I got this one for 11K which I still think was a really good deal. Hope this info helps you out some.

I think most of the important stuff has been covered, but I'll hit the high points:

The first year for the fullsize Blazer (aka Tahoe) was 92'.  The 94' model got a new "modular" grill on it.  In 95', the interior was upgraded, you got an airbag, and the mirrors were upgraded to a sleeker design.  The Sport package was available from 92'-99'.  If I'm not mistaken, the first year for a two door tahoe with two wheel drive was 96'.  I believe the turbo diesel was introduced in 93'.  The 92' model had the 4L60 transmission, while the 93'+ trucks had the 4L60E.  The 92'-95' trucks had the TBI 350 which was rated at 200hp, 310tq.  In 96' the Vortec 350 was introduced and it made 255hp, 335tq.  The Vortec engine is noticeablely more powerful.  Also the transmission seems to shift a lot smoother behind the Vortec.  A drivers side airbag was introduced in 97'.  Push button 4WD was available starting in 96'.  The third brake light on the back was added in 95'.

I love my 95'.  The engine isn't as powerful as a Vortec's (before I modded it), but its incredibly reliable and easy to work on.  I think the TBI 350's sound better with exhaust.  I've had two 95' Tahoes, and both have never once had a problem.  I would highly recommend the 3.73 gear option and the towing package so you get the transmission cooler and reciever hitch.  The Vortec 350's have a lot more power, and I would recommend looking for a 96'+ truck.

Just to throw this in, one rare/interesting thing about my truck is, it was an early 95' model, so it has Tahoe badging, but Blazer sewn on the seats (their new style seats).  So apparently, the switch to the Tahoe name was a last minute decision.  My other 95' Tahoe didn't have anything written on the seats- but they were leather, and the seats in my Tahoe Sport are cloth.

Good luck and I love my 2door Tahoe.

Americanmusleman is right. The new body style was introduced in 92. The GMC Jimmy was renamed the Yukon at that time. Chevy used the Blazer name untill 95 when it was changed to Tahoe and a 4 door option was added. My last truck was a 92 Blazer. It was pretty well loaded. It had captian chairs, 4x4, 265/75 tires, 350, AT, ABS, factory fender flares, etc. I loved it and it was still running strong when I sold it in 01 with 150,000 miles. Chevy needs to start selling 2 door Tahoes again.
