Chassis Lube Grease Type

GM-Tech I have a few questions on chassis lube....

 

1. Does GM use a special grease for lubing the chassis ? I notice it's blue ? Is it special ?

 

2. I want to lube my own chassis and am considering either going to buy exactly what the dealer uses or a mobil 1 synthetic grease...any suggestions...on which is preferred ?

 

3. Is it true that the zerks should not be lubed unless it's greater than 10-degree's F or above as to not damage the boots / rubber... ?

 

Finally exactly how much grease should I put in each ? Till she oozes out or just enough to expand the boot but not leak ?

 

Heard/read somewhere if you jack too much grease into zerk as to ooze out the boot you increase the possibliity of dirt entering and hence failure of joint somewhere along the line....

 

Thoughts ?

Here's what GM says about it...

Wipe off all dirt from the grease fitting before lubricating the joint. Ball joints should not be lubricated unless the temperature of the ball joints is -12°C (10°F) or higher. During cold weather, allow the ball joint to warm up as necessary before being lubricated. Use a low-pressure grease gun on all joints in order to prevent seal damage.

 

I think in the last 20 years it has gotten to 35 degrees at night just a few times so I never had to worry about temperature. As a result, I had to look this up.

 

Apply grease slowly while watching the grease seal. Apply the grease until the grease is seen bleeding from the seal. If the seal expands but you do not see any grease, do not apply any more grease. Allow time for the grease to bleed from the seal.

 

Is the grease special? Only in that it's designed for that purpose. You wouldn't want to pump wheel bearing grease into the fittings. The penzoil chassis lube we use is blue too.

One last question.....does it matter if there is weight on the joints, tie rods etc.

 

Hear varying opinions that I should lift the front end, and others say no or it doesn't matter...

The GM spec for chassis lube is NGLI 2. Just find a chassis grease tube with that certification and you will be fine. Most greases are NGLI 2 these days including wheel bearing grease.

Talked with my local dealer and they gave me a tube of theirs....

 

Mobilgrease XHP222 that's what they use....it's a marine based grease that resists washout and for severe service.....
