Now it's my turn

Starting to get extended crank times on my truck, doesn't happen all the time, but it's happening more frequently now. :D I'm guessing and hoping its the FPR and not the fuel pump. from what I've read about it, it's easy to replace, something I can do myself. I guess I'll go down to the dealer to order one next week.

I have a 2000 serria with the 5.3 L engine which started fine cold but not once it warmed up. I changed the pressure regulator in about (15) minutes and all my porblems with start up disappeared. It's easy to get the pressure regulator off the fuel rail but I had probelms getting the nee regulator back on. Good luck!!!

Plugged or partially plugged fuel filter.

Dirty injectors. Try double dosage Techron Cleaner in two tankfulls.

Winter re-blend with higher percentage alcohol, so less BTUs per gallon and less power. The computer needs to relearn the HOW2 manage the fuel mixture. I usually reset the computers each spring and fall when the EPA mandated re-blend in high density metro areas occurs. Over at the Suburban forum, some have reported significant increases in MPG after resetting their computers. Up to 2.5MPG increase (1.5-2MPG on my Sub's 7.4L).

O2's and CAT on it's last legs.

MAF might need cleaning.

1999, so NBS and direct fire, so no rotor/cap. Check the condition of the coils. Ove at the Suburban forum some have reported problems with cracking insulation.

How many miles on the plugs? Maybe time to change them. Consider modifying them by cutting off the ground electrode to have it's tip centered over the positive electrode.

Already changed the plugs and plug wires, had the 100,000 mile maintenance done, including fuel filter. I run Techron every 8,000 miles, cleaned the MAF Sensor and throttle body a few months ago. I reset the computer a few months ago as well when Winter Blend started up here in Denver. I'm pretty sure it's going to be the Fuel Pressure Regulator, or the fuel filter, or the fuel pump, or all of the above. <sigh> oh well, get it done, get the water pump replaced, replace the alternator, and the leaking output shaft seal, and I should be good for another 100,000 miles. or until the tranny goes out.

I've also sprayed Amsoil HD metal protectorant on as many of the ground straps as I can find/see.

That has been reported to be a source of these types of gremlins.

Good luck!

Mine was easy to check. If your fuel pressureregulator has a vacuum line attached, pull it off. If it's wet with fuel, you've got a bad regulator.

Welp, count me as the latest victim. I had been getting my SES coming on some about a month back during a colder snap. I replaced my battery and the light quit coming on...so I figured the 'puter adjusted and the issue was bye-bye. Well, on my drive back to Loveland from Denver my truck died. At first I thought it was just the headwind slowing me down a tad, but when I went to give it more gas...nada. It was like it hit the governer, so I pulled off of I25 and limped it for about 100 yards and then it died completely and wouldn't restart. I gave it a few minutes and cranked it and it sputtered a few times, backfired and that was it...it wouldn't move on its own. My sender has been dead for a year or two, so I thought that it might be just out of gas. But, my SES light had come on as I was pulling it off the road and was still on, so I knew something was up either way. I know I can go around 400 miles on a tank and my last average was 19.5mpg. My tripmeter said I had gone 340, so I knew that if it was out of gas, something was really wrong as it would then have averaged 13mpg, which it has never done other than towing. I had it towed to the local GM dealer.

They called me this morning and said they thought the fuel pump was shot and that they should replace it and the sender. They remembered that I told them that the truck was acting like it was out of gas and that it could actually be out of gas and said taht the tech banged on the tank and it didn't sound right. They said that it had no fuel pressure at all. I asked them if they'd get some gas and put it in, to see what would happen and asked for a callback. They called back and said that it fired right up and that I could come get it unless I wanted the pump/sender done. I said that something had to have caused the SES and poor mileage and asked them to check the regulator since I had checked this site to see what might be wrong. Sure enough, that was it. I had them change the fuel filter and regulator and figured I'd wait to do the other stuff until later. I just wanted my truck back.

Thanks to this site, I didn't have to eat the cost of the pump and sender this time and can save a few bucks to get it done in the near future. I'm not so sure that I wouldn't have paid for a fuel pump, sender and filter only to have it die again or still not work.

I have always had good luck with these guys, but I felt like I was troubleshooting the issue more than they were, thanks to Ryanbab and Ryan and the others on here.

The ironic thing is that I have run the thing out of gas 2 times in the last few months and I work at a refinery. The first time, I literally ran out right in front of the truck terminal. I just get so tired of going to the station several times a week and tend to push it a little, which I know is bad for the pump because the fuel cools it.

Ryan(Colorado one), how about that wind yesterday? I sat there just south of 160th with my truck just rockin' because of that dang wind, while I was waiting for a ride and the tow truck. I hate the wind...........

I love the wind. It's even funner when I'm driving the work truck (01 Sierra) with the 40 ft ladder on top as well as the 28 ft ladder on top, try driving up I-25 in that thing with the wind blowing 40-50 MPH from the west! I make it up to Loveland once every other week or so, I work on a property up there near the Factory Outlets maybe we can meet up sometime for a drink.
