Tried to Grease my Baby...

Well, it was time for the oil, filter and lube again this weekend on my '00 Silverado.  Anyway, the oil change part went fine but the lube...another story.

This was only the second oil change that I have done on this truck and the first time i didn't have a grease gun so it wasn't greased.  Anyway, I was able to locate the zerts but then I had problems.  My grease gun is the type that you connect the hose to the zert and then you have to use both hands to manually pump the grease gun.  Anyway, I would "snap" the hose connection onto the zert but when I went to pump the grease, the hose would come off of the zert.  Some of the zerts wouldn't even hold the hose connection on at all.

My question is...are the zerts a different size than on my '97?  The grease gun worked fine when I greased the '97 but seems to pop off when used on the '00.  So, are the zerts different?  Do I need a different, better grease gun?

Please help.

Thanks, B.J.

Yep, greasing these can be a chore sometimes.  To my knowledge, the zerks are standard size (anyone out there know this for sure?).  My gun doesn't like to stay on real well either, so I end up holding the end on with one hand and rotating the handle such that I am pushing it straight down toward the ground.  I know there was discussion in various threads earlier about some of these issues.

It helps to have a longer hose  ;)  and be a contortionist sometimes, but mainly for those 2 way up in there.  I think it was ryanbab here who installed right angle zerks on these, which helps some.  That's my 2 cents on it!

I installed one 90 degree.  This one was located where you take off the front plastic splash guard.

The size of the zerks are 6mm

I bought one of those pistol gripped grease guns that I can use with one hand. Now I can hold the hose on the grease zerk with one hand and pump the grease in with the other. Works great.
